The town center of Concord, Massachusetts seen from Old Hill Burying Ground, in 1775 and 2025. The top image shows the British redcoats marching through the town on April 19, 1775, on the first day of the American Revolution. Earlier that morning, the redcoats had been involved in a brief skirmish in Lexington, and they then proceeded westward to Concord, where they searched for hidden stores of munitions.

The top image is an engraving that was produced in 1775 by Amos Doolittle, based on sketches that Ralph Earl produced a few weeks after the battles. In the distant center of the image is the Wright Tavern, which was used by the redcoats as their temporary headquarters. On the left side is the old meetinghouse, and behind it is the old mill pond that was once located south of Main Street.

Today, some of the buildings are still standing here, including Wright Tavern, which is partially visible beyond the trees in the center of the photo. The old meetinghouse burned in 1900, and the present-day First Parish Church now stands on the site.

My Top 50 Most Classic Photos of the Civil War. HERE'S #21 showing the Richmond Grays (later 1st Virginia) in Charlestown, Va. (historic spelling and state), around the time of the trial of John Brown in late 1859. You know the story. This image has been often published to depict the eagerness for the War, as young, future Confederates play for the camera. And despite its pre-Civil War date, this photo was a Civil War classic long before the man standing at left center was IDd as John Wilkes Booth. This is one of several photos (I know of five) of the Richmond Grays at Charlestown. I encourage anyone wanting to examine the Booth evidence, the possible location of the photo, or learn about the others in the photos, to visit the link in the first comment, with 95 pages on this series! I'll also link to the plate I post here from the Valentine in Richmond.
