Albany is the capital city of the state of New York. European settlement in the region began in the early 17th century when Dutch colonists established Fort Nassau on the Hudson River. In 1664, the English took control of the area and renamed it Albany in honor of the Duke of Albany, who later became King James II of England.
Albany played a significant role in the American Revolution. In 1775, the Albany Congress was held in the city to discuss ways of uniting the thirteen colonies against British rule. The Albany Plan of Union, proposed by Benjamin Franklin, was also introduced during this meeting.
During the 19th century, Albany became a major transportation hub due to its location on the Erie Canal, which connected the Hudson River to the Great Lakes. The city also became a center for manufacturing, particularly in the areas of iron and steel production.
