One of my favorite childhood foods would have to be greens. No one could make them taste as good as my mom could. When I see greens in the grocery store it takes me back to being 10 years old standing in the garden watching Mama pick, what she would call a mess. She did as I do today and added every type of green she had to the pot. She seasoned her greens with salt pork, because we raised our own hogs and that was readily available. Our largest meal was at noon, because on farm the work usually didn’t end until late evening. The evening meal was very light. Mom and Dad went to bed at dark and were usually up before the sunrise. They would sit over breakfast and talk about what had to be done that day. The work was hard and an absolute gamble. One hail storm could knock out a whole crop. I didn’t realize until well into adulthood how lucky I am to be a farmer’s daughter.
