RARE SIGHTING: Oh, look, it's one of LRS' trucks purchased from a hauling firm they bought in Wisconsin making the trash pickup rounds today on SW Third Street (Illinois 17) in this afternoon. No "jaws of trash" making pickups in their big truck. At this rate, trash will be collected throughout the city by next month. Maybe not. Bring in Quick's. We're all ready after these idiots.

TWO IMPORTANT ISSUES will be discussed at the City Council Ordinance and Police Committee at 6 p.m. Monday (Sept. 23) at City Hall.

-- A hotel and motel room tax apparently is being considered once again. It seems the city has made up its mind on moving forward on this tax on tourists.
-- The city is looking at regulating garage sales. Why?

If you have concerns on either of these plans at City Hall, show up at 6 p.m. Monday in the City Hall council chambers. Let the council's committee members know what you think about these ideas. The hotel-motel tax was put on hold last time because of concerns expressed by residents.

HIGHWAY IMPROVEMENTS COMING: The state has announced plans to make $3.5 million in improvements to Illinois Highway 17 through Aledo in the coming years.

The plan was included in an announcement made Friday by Gov. JB Pritzker and the state Department of Transportation that has been described as the largest multiyear program to build and repair infrastructure in state history.

The plans for the complete stretch of SW 3rd Street and SE 3rd Street through the city of Aledo calls for a standard overlay from 12th Avenue SW on the far west wide to east of Illinois 94 on the east side. The stretch is designated as Illinois 17 the entire length, as well as being designated as Illinois 94 from its eastern junction of the two highways to South College Avenue, where Illinois 94 turns south.

The state plans to spend $3.5 million on the project sometime during the fiscal years of 2026 to 2030.

Across the state, a total of $41.42 billion will be spent over six years, spread across all modes of transportation and reach into every county in Illinois. A news release stated that the new program surpasses the previous record set last year and continues the momentum of the governor’s bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital program. The program is designed to modernize transportation and create economic opportunity.

Other projects in Mercer County labeled under the massive undertaking include the following:

-- Spending $8.7 million for standard overlay on Illinois 17 from east of U.S. 67 in Viola to U.S. 150 in Henry County. The work is slated for fiscal years 2026 to 2030.

-- Spending $8 million for designed overlay on U.S. 67 from 0.2 miles north of 40th Avenue south to Illinois 135, as well as on Illinois 135 and U.S. 67 to east of Main Street in Alexis. The work is slated for fiscal year 2025.

-- Spending $500,000 for bridge approach roadway bridge deck overlay for the span over Tom's Creek on U.S. 67, 0.2 miles north of Illinois 135 East. The work is slated for fiscal year 2025 in conjunction with the other Alexis area work.

-- Spending $4.2 million for designed overlay cold in-place recycling for 170th Avenue from U.S. 67 in Preemption to 5th Avenue in Sherrard. The work is slated for fiscal years 2026 to 2030.

"Rebuild Illinois has been among my highest priorities since I became governor after years of neglect and disinvestment that held back our state’s growth,” Pritzker said. “Over the next six years -- stretching all the way to fiscal year 2030 -- we will continue making historic investments into improving every aspect of our infrastructure and in every part of our state. This plan is guiding the build-out of a world-class transportation system that all of Illinois deserves, and we are creating hundreds of thousands of quality jobs while doing it.”

The plans announced Friday are part of IDOT’s Multi-Year Improvement Program to provide Illinoisans and IDOT stakeholders with an improvement plan for Illinois’ transportation system within a proposed six-year program.

Through IDOT’s plan, the department strives to provide details on the plan’s funding, process and proposed projects and initiatives that will preserve, maintain, improve and expand Illinois’ system. It is IDOT’s expectation that these efforts continue to provide Illinois with safe, reliable, and accessible travel and freight options.
