I AM FOR SHORT TERM RENTALS! My point in This post is to raise awareness, not only for the owners of short term rental homes but also for all of the other people who will be affected by the decision that will be out into action tomorrow. This post may be irrelevant to a lot of you, but it means a lot to me and several that I know. I ask that you would please read this, like, and share to get this message out. An email received today by many including myself, from Airbnb, stated that tomorrow - Thursday, May 24th - there will be a vote to ban ALL short term rentals in the City of New Orleans. EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY. NO grace period. NO time for the homeowners, in which this decision will affect, to prepare their case. NO time for the employees, property managers, neighbors (whom are for these properties) to prepare their case either. A few weeks ago I came across a news segment of an advocate for the Alliance of Neighborhood Prosperity and an advocate from the opposing side (excuse me for not being aware of whom said woman is as I was not really worried as to who she was), voicing their opinions on why STR's should/not be legal in New Orleans. My opinion, the opposing sides argument was crap. It was argued that long-term homeowners have been and are being pushed out by STR's. That neighborhoods are dwindling due to STR's. Not only am I a resident of New Orleans, but also an employee and business owner of a Short Term Rental company in New Orleans. New Orleans is a tourist attraction. One of few that are actually worth visiting. New Orleans is NOT somewhere where people actually want to raise their families anymore. Residents are trying to move to places that are safer, better, to raise their children. Somewhere where business and growth opportunities are better. So, why turn their home in to a Short Term rental? Why not sell? Does anyone have any clue as to what the real estate market looked like up until today? Or what it will look like tomorrow? Does anyone know or care that these homeowners actually return MULTIPLE times a year, to their homes, with their families? New Orleans may not be as safe as we wish any longer, but it is still home to these families. STR or not! Not one time have i heard anyone say that the decrease in residential neighborhoods long-term tenants had not resulted in a STR! Restricting STR's because your hotels are mad that they've had a decrease in profit and income is ridiculous. Restricting STR's because neighbors are mad that they won't see the same smiling face outside everyday, but a different one every week is ridiculous. Restricting STR's will hurt everyone, especially financially. Is it okay that we have a high poverty rate and the City has homes just sitting around waiting for a buyer that no one can afford because not even the working class can afford to buy one of these homes? Instead, the City taxes these homeowners and buys and builds big elaborate buildings and for what? Let's make sure your big, bad politicians and employees have something lavish to work in while we are sitting here having to fight for our homes! Our work! The majority of the homes that are STR's, these homeowners worked for! And let me point out! Unemployment rates may have risen a tad, but STR's have opened up a whole new world of employment! whether it long term or short! Would you tell your child that you had told must get a summer job that they were not allowed to work for a STR home? Concierge, meeting guests and answering questions, lawncare? I doubt it! A homeowner may live out of town, but that is why they have property managers. Myself being one of them! We do what we can to ensure that not only are the homeowners and their homes safe and protected, but that the guests respect the house rules and our city! I don't want to drag on with this post, but I want to make anyone who is not already aware, aware of the fact that the city is trying to control what we do with our own property, controlling us. This is America. It is a free country. We work for what we own so why can't we be in control of that? If this is what we have come down to as people, then long-term rentals should be in question also. why is it okay to sign a 'lease ' for a certain amount of time, but technical our guests are signing a rental agreement for whatever the specified amount of time when booking these properties? The City of New Orleans has already collected from these said homeowners fees, taxes, fines. My question, for what? To ban everything upon a majority vote tomorrow? How many of the voting party actually have their own STR's?? My opinion, not many if this is even up for a vote. CITY OF NEW ORLEANS - Our crime rate is off the roof! Focus on that and spend OUR hard earned money on correcting that than wasting time on something as irrelevant as our SHORT TERM RENTALS!!! ALSO: food for thought - how many of you voting against, use Airbnb to book your own vacations?
