Anessa Books

Anessa Books I am a book coach and formatter for indie-authors. I teach others how to format, edit, and guide new authors through the maze that is self-publishing.

I have a coaching client who does everything I tell him (bless his innocent little heart). Every suggestion I make he takes. Every recommended change in wording by me or his proofreader, he makes. About six years ago, when we first started working together, I told him he needed to rewrite the first book he'd written. It had about fifteen different points of view including those of very minor walk-on characters who are seen and heard from once in the book....

One reason why people love reading fiction is for the satisfaction of seeing a protagonist overcome adversity. This could come in the form of solving a mystery, winning a battle or war, or defeating a big-bad evil. But the most fascinating (and I think fulfilling) story is that of the protagonist who overcomes the adversity of themselves. People (and especially fictional people) are frequently their own worst enemy....

“It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents – except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.”...

I’m trying something that I think is ethically unsound. Is that terrible of me? Quite possibly. But I’m doing it anyway and, if you can get around your ethics, you might want to try it as well. I believe very strongly that AI is overreaching. It is taking over everything—including so much of writing and publishing. Authors are now using AI for ideas of what to write, checking their grammar and punctuation, fixing their word choice, creating their covers, and now creating audio books....

I've got a new book coming out at the end of this month so I'm going to do something I've done very (read "too") rarely. I am marketing my book. Yes! I actually sat down and made a plan and am now carrying it out. This is almost unheard of for me. My marketing plan is four-fold. I made the first book in the series free and advertised it on Freebooksy, in newsletter swaps, and on Facebook and Reddit....

My apologies to my regular readers — I’ve been away for a few weeks (enjoying some summer fun), but I’m back now and ready to go. When you're reading a really good book you feel as if you're been sucked into the story. You live it along with the characters. And when you are there you can't let it go, you simply cannot put the book down—or it’s really hard to do so....

How do you write? With what medium? Do you type on your laptop or write longhand? I am here to advocate for writing by hand. There are a great many advantages to doing so: 1. It’s good for your brain When you write by hand, more neurons are firing in your brain than when you type. Just the fact that you need to form twenty-six different shapes gets that brain working....

It's been a while since I've written about how to start a novel but since I'm working with a new coaching client who is going through this right now, I thought it couldn't hurt to share what I'm doing with her. How you begin a novel very much depends on whether you're a plotter (who plans out the whole book before they write a word) or a pantser (who writes by simply sitting down at a computer and writes with no knowledge of where their story is going to go—as Stephen King says, you write until you get to the end)....

I am at That stage of writing my novel: Editing. You either love editing or hate it. It is taking your words and ideas and refining them. It is looking at the forest after you've spent months in the weeds. It's hard. It's painful. But it can be exciting too—you might find that the scene you slaved over reads smoothly and adds so much to your story....

Rachel Toalson wrote a wonderful blog post for Writer UnBoxed. It’s about getting to the heart of your story — why you wrote it and why readers will remember it long after they finished reading it. Sometimes it’s really hard finding the heart of your story. If you start with a what-if situation, an idea for a plot, or simply just your main character, it’s so easy to get caught up in developing that situation, plot, or character, I mean, that’s what you’re writing, right?...

Does your mystery novel have a romance in it? Does your speculative fiction have a mystery element? Does your romance take place on another planet? It seems that there's a lot of cross-genre writing going on. I attribute this to indie- publishing. Traditional publishing houses used to refuse books that transversed genres claiming that they wouldn't know which shelf to put it on (my own Regency-set fantasy romance was rejected for this reason twenty years ago)....

There was recently a discussion on the Regency Fiction Writers’ forum concerning historical accuracy. For a group whose courses mostly teach accurate historical detail (everything from architecture to dancing to cookery), there were a number of authors who commented that they didn’t believe a historical novel needed to be 100% accurate. The discussion began with someone looking for a name for a Regency romance as lacking in accuracy as the Bridgerton television show....
