Cigar & Spirits Magazine

Cigar & Spirits Magazine The official page for Cigar & Spirits Magazine What is Cigar & Spirits Magazine? Cigar & Spirits Magazine is an up and coming bi-monthly publication tailored to the upscale gentleman or woman.

This publication, for both industry and consumer audiences, is for those who believe that there is nothing in life like a great cigar, your spirit of choice, and good company. The publication is available online through www.CigarandSpirits.com, and in Barnes & Noble bookstores with print distribution growing. The focus is on reviewing top of the line existing brands, as well as new brands breaking ground in the industry. Not only does Cigar & Spirits cover the brands in these categories, but the magazine includes industry news, as well as information about related lifestyle topics.

Mission: Pairing a cigar with a spirit is a centuries old pastime practiced wherever the two have appeared together, the world over. People have long loved the relaxing qualities, the intertwined flavors, and the engaging conversations that accompany the experience. Even after centuries of the human tradition, Cigar & Spirits Magazine is the first and only publication to ever specifically feature both, without focusing solely on one or the other. The publication highlights this multi-way connection between cigar, spirit, and the memorable human experiences that go hand in hand with each other. Also covered are a broad range of related lifestyle topics that the connoisseur can appreciate, from fine dining to high fashion. We aim to be informative, intriguing, educational and of course, entertaining.

During the early 1900's when cigars were carnival prices, the price of cigars ranged from $0.01-0.20. If cigars were still this price in the present, after inflation, they would sell between $0.28-$5.71 each. ⁣⁣

Throwback Thursday: Bryan Cranston's love of mezcal was cultivated due to Aaron Paul's influence.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
As a teenager Bryan drank mezcal due to how cheap it was, but he describe it as being absolutely vile. He likens the smell and taste to rubbing alcohol. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Aaron introduced him to world of quality mezcal, and the pair haven't looked back since. Thus, Dos Hombres was born.⁣⁣

Fun Fact: The word stogie comes from the town of Conestoga, Pennsylvania. Tobacco was grown in the area, Lancaster County, and Conestoga wagons were also made there. The Conestoga wagon transported families west in the 1800s. The leaders of the wagon trains would often smoke long, homegrown cigars using fairly rustic leaves that gave off a very strong smell. The cigars became known as stogies.⁣

Joe Bonamassa’s got the blues—literally. At the time of our interview, the guitar great was to have been wrapping the first leg of his sold-out spring tour of U.S. theaters and arenas, but the coronavirus forced him—as it has every other touring musician, from stadium fillers to club acts—off the road the foreseeable future. “It’s a drag, to put it mildly,” he says. “In the last 20 years, I’ve only postponed four shows due to illness. In the blink of an eye, I had to scratch everything on the boards, and who knows when we can get back out there? It’s not that I’m so concerned for myself; it’s everybody else—there are many, many people that go into the touring industry.”⁣

Anthony (Anthony Anderson) has proved to be a durable and versatile actor since the late 1990s. He’s inherently comic-minded, but also has a lot to say about what’s going on these days. His output on social media during this tumultuous period has positioned him as an emerging Black voice in our culture. He’s fully aware that fate has smiled upon him, particularly in light of the hardships suffered by many people of color. “I’ve wanted to do this my whole life, and 40 years later, to be successful and have a voice I get to live my dream.”⁣

When tobacconist W. Curtis Draper founded his Washington, D.C., store in 1887, the shop was located just two blocks from its current location, which is just down the street from the White House. It catered to a small but dedicated customer base for decades.⁣

In 1970, Draper’s became one of two tobacco stores to introduce Macanudo to the United States. Over the years, several American Presidents were known to frequent the store, including Calvin Coolidge, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.⁣

In 1990, the shop was inherited by former employee John Anderson, who also happens to be the current President of the Premium Cigar Association. Anderson has since enlarged the business by taking it from a full-line tobacco shop to a brick-and-mortar store with a lucrative online business.⁣

The store also sponsors the Little Puff charity event in D.C. every year.⁣

Today we’re going to talk about another unitasker you might want to replace: the cigar cutter. And why you might want to replace it with the ultimate cigar-lover’s multitool: the cigar knife.⁣

One of the finest knives in its class is the Le Petit by Les Fines Lames ($149). This friction folder is made in France and comes in a variety of handle materials (Padauk pictured). One great design feature is that the cigar indent is on the outside of the frame, doing double-duty as a finger choil for extra grip. It is a truly classy cutter for all cigar connoisseurs.⁣

Throwing it back this Thursday with our January/February cover stars Sammy Hagar and Adam Levine!⁣

Sammy Hagar, the wailing, mega-watt veteran frontman for hardcharging groups like Montrose, Van Halen and Chickenfoot; and Adam Levine, the smooth, classy-cool singer who, when he’s not leading multiplatinum poppers Maroon 5, holds hopeful newbies’ futures in his hands as a judge on TV’s The Voice.⁣

What could these two wildly disparate personalities have in common? For one thing, there’s tequila. “I’ve always loved tequila,” says Levine. “It’s always been my absolute favorite spirit.”⁣

As for Hagar, his affinity for tequila is already the stuff of modern legend. The musician was one of the first celebrities to put his stamp on the boutique spirit industry when he founded Cabo Wabo Tequila in 1996. In just a few short years, the brand became a monster, enabling him to eventually sell his stake in the company – in a pair of transactions ending in 2009 – to the Campari Group for a tidy sum of $100 million.⁣

If there’s one thing that Arnold Schwarzenegger is known for besides his legendary film roles and his stint as governor of California, it’s his love of cigars.⁣

Arnold's love of cigars stems from his initial introduction to the Kennedy's when his wife Maria brought him home to meet her father Ted. Ted offered him a cigar, and the rest was history.⁣

Arnold loves Punch cigars, however, he is open to trying any and all cigars.⁣

Any baseball fan knows the name David Ortiz – a Dominican Republic native that made a living 4-bagging balls out of the park in Boston and became well known as “Big Papi”. Heading into retirement, Ortiz decided to step up to the plate in the cigar industry. Teaming up with Tabacalera El Artista, creators of the 91-rated Exactus brand, they constructed a cigar to match Big Papi’s performance – one bound for the hall of fame.⁣

Pop the box open and there it is – an oily Ecuador Habano Claro Wrapper rolled to perfection over a Dominican Criollo ’98 binder and packed with Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers. Pleasant notes of pepper and chestnut will first grace your palate, thanks to the Ecuador Habano wrapper, followed by a touch of cream, and brought all together with rich notes of earth and leather. This medium-bodied premium from David Ortiz isn’t your ordinary celebrity cigar, this thing is a home run.⁣

08/29/2020

One of the first casinos built on the budding Las Vegas Strip—so named because of its straight, 4-mile stretch—was the Flamingo. Partially financed by Benjamin “Bugsy” Seigel, the mobster most synonymous with Las Vegas, the hotel and casino was opened in 1946. The project was started by publishing entrepreneur Billy Wilkerson, but when he ran out of money due to the high war-time cost of building materials, New York mobster Bugsy Seigel stepped in. Bugsy’s angle was to offer the high-end liquor, food and entertainment in Las Vegas, but at affordable prices. He wanted to attract both high rollers and average Americans. Although Seigel was part owner when the casino was being built, he soon muscled Wilkerson out of his shares and became the sole proprietor.⁣

Seigel wanted the Flamingo to be known as the West’s Greatest Resort Hotel. He spared no expense in building the resort, and soon ran out of money. When the Flamingo opened in December, the hotel portion of the resort was not complete. The resort did not live up to its fanfare without the luxury rooms that would encourage guests to stay and gamble, and the casino soon began losing money. By January, the Flamingo was closed. ⁣

Determined to bring the resort back to life, Seigel borrowed money from his mobster associates. Construction resumed, and the Flamingo re-opened in March, this time with an adjacent hotel. Although the resort began gradually turning a profit for its investors, Seigel had lost favor with some of the more powerful mobsters in Las Vegas. He was murdered in Beverly Hills the following June, dying in a hail of gunfire while reading a newspaper at his girlfriend’s house.⁣

08/24/2020

Some cigar manufacturers are a little willy-nilly in how they go about choosing their brand names. Not so for Freemasons Fouad Kashouty and George Dakrat, who operate out of Brick, New Jersey (What are the chances of that?) and christened their cigar company Hiram & Solomon in honor of the Masonic tradition they espouse and the brethren they hold dear.⁣

As Kashouty explains, “In our Masonic traditions, we refer to Solomon, Hiram King of Tyre and Hiram Abiff as being the three Grand Masters. Solomon is none other than King Solomon, who is mentioned in the Old Testament as the king who built the first temple in Jerusalem. ⁣

“Hiram Abiff is the central character of an allegory presented to all candidates during the third degree in Freemasonry,” he continues. “Hiram is presented as the chief architect of King Solomon’s Temple, who was murdered in the Temple he designed by three ruffians as they unsuccessfully attempted to force him to divulge the Master Masons' secret passwords. The themes of the allegory are the importance of fidelity and the certainty of death. So, there’s two Hirams and one Solomon, and we combined them for our name.”⁣

A PROPERLY AGED PREMIUM CIGAR IS LIKE A FINE WINE; its taste improves and its value increases over time. Price appreciation is especially true for Cuban cigars, with many in high demand due to their mystique and rarity. ⁣

Not all cigars become lightweights with age. Some build in strength while others mellow and mature. Fresh cigars can be harsh and give off an ammonia smell during what is known as a “sick” period. Most of this ammonia will dissipate within a year. Young cigars will not have the refined complexity of a vintage smoke. Flavors lack sophistication, and may be reminiscent of grass, or hay, with pepper harshness.⁣

Perhaps it's time to add Glasgow to your bucket list.⁣

Glasgow is the UK’s first UNESCO CITY OF MUSIC and the title is well-deserved. Home to the world’s oldest surviving music hall, Glasgow’s music scene is steeped in history. A stroll down Finnieston strip gives way to a number of Scottish pubs that have nightly live music as well as many spontaneous performances. For a great mix of history and music, visit Scotia Bar for a pint.⁣

Built in 1792, Scotia Bar claims to be the oldest pub in Glasgow and is a popular hangout of musicians and poets. Although they feature scheduled live music Thursday through Sunday, the pub provides instruments for anyone who would like to make some spur-of-the-moment tunes. ⁣

Scottish pubs are synonymous with music. However, Glasgow’s music scene goes beyond the walls of a pub. Glasgow hosts many music festivals annually, including, but not limited to, Summer Sessions, Celtic Connections, Piping Live and TRNSMT. It’s also home to one of the top performing arts schools in the world, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.⁣

It's Thursday, and what better way to celebrate it than by acknowledging Throwback Thursday?⁣

In our September/October 2017 issue of Cigar & Spirits we interviewed Al Micallef of (@micallefcigars).⁣

Micallef is a renowned Fort Worth, Texas businessman and innovator. His dossier is a diverse one. He’s been an entrepreneur his whole life. Dating back to his young roots in Detroit as the proverbial lemonade stand kid, Christmas tree lot owner, and as a rust cleaner salesman he’s made his mark. As his endeavors became more refined, Al Micallef has overseen businesses as far reaching as silicone rubber companies, ranchland development, and hot spot restaurants. He’s a self-made man and a Doctor of Jurisprudence to boot. It’s no surprise this Renaissance Wrangler has successfully made the transition from cigar lover to President and Founder of a successful brand in a couple of years.⁣

His partnership with the respected Gomez Sanchez family in 2016 helped make his brand a rising star in the industry. The Micallef ⁣
Reserva Leyenda (with its $42 price point) garnered a lot of buzz and has been highly rated in a variety of industry publications and other media outlets. The Micallef portfolio is distinct and price points have enough spread to include most enthusiasts. The brand has proven its ability to connect to new and seasoned smokers alike.⁣
