Sunken Press

Sunken Press In 1837, an angry mob in Alton, IL killed abolitionist journalist Elijah Lovejoy after throwing three of his presses into the Mississippi.

Upon his death, his fourth press joined them in the depths. We are here to honor his memory and avenge him. Alton may be the town that killed him, but since he decided it was worth his martyrdom, it deserves continued stewardship and vigilance. Enter Sunken Press, hosted by Cory Davenport, a local journalist with more than a decade of experience covering the region, Sunken Press wants to solve the

world's problems in our own backyard. He is joined by Nicole Gory, a person with textured life experience involving homelessness, addiction, poverty, single motherhood, and issues facing those whose perspectives fall through the cracks of mainstream journalism. Join us as we ask tough questions, share our worldviews, and challenge any preconceived notions we have regarding our community, our nation, our world, and how all of them fit together.

Over the last year, we’ve had the honor of showcasing local artists, nonprofits, beloved community members, businesses, politics, and more.

For our final project, we interviewed candidates appearing on Riverbend-area ballots at both the state and federal levels in preparation for the March 17 primary election.

One of our main missions at Sunken Press has always been to bring our followers the information they need to make informed decisions. Whether that meant sharing where to purchase the best native plants at the Farmers Market or, in this case, creating an easy-to-view comparison of political candidates so you can confidently vote for the person who most aligns with your values, I feel certain that we provided that — even if only for a short time.

Below are two videos. Each candidate was asked the same questions, ranging from economics to foreign policy and everything in between.

Learning more about how local politics affects our daily lives has been one of my favorite parts of being involved in Sunken Press. This will actually be my first time voting in a primary election, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to gain more insight into these candidates.

I insist that you watch, share, and most importantly — VOTE!!!

A huge shout out to our candidates for taking the time to chat with us.
And a warm hug and farewell to our faithful followers who made Sunken Press the best project to be part of.

Never stop learning, asking questions, and raising heck.

Xoxo,
Nicole

Our last regular episode of Sunken Press is here (a candidate interview project will be released this weekend). And we're ending on a wholesome note.

Jonathan Harms gives us a full history lesson on skateboarding — from its earliest days in the 1960s, riding clay wheels while barefoot, to the revolution sparked by surf culture, drained swimming pools, and backyard halfpipes.

We talk about how skateboarding exploded in the ’70s, nearly disappeared in the early ’80s, and found new life through DIY culture, magazines like Thrasher, and later mainstream moments that helped push it back into public view. Jonathan walks us through the early skateparks in the St. Louis area and shares what cities get right (and wrong) when building skateparks today.

Decades after first stepping on a board, Jonathan reinvented himself as an elite slalom racer, competing nationally and internationally against some of the best in the discipline. Along the way, he’s documented the culture he loves, with his skate photography appearing in print magazines. He’s still in it, racing through cones, traveling to competitions, and preserving the scene through his lens.

This episode is local history, skate history, and cultural history all rolled into one.

Shout out to Producer Ryan's dad, Paul Graf, for introducing us to Jonathan.

After a year of building Sunken Press together, we’ve agreed to conclude this chapter of the project.

Sunken Press, as produced by Longshot Media, will be coming to a close following the release of our final in-progress episodes. The existing archive, including all Substack content, will remain available as free public content.

Cory Davenport plans to continue independently and relaunch under the Sunken Press name in the future.

Nicole Gory plans to tackle other creative endeavors while taking time to grieve the closing of this chapter.

Producers Ryan Long and Missy Long will pause to recharge and consider future projects as they move forward from this transition.

We’re proud of the work created during this chapter and grateful for the time, energy, and creativity each of us brought to it.

Thank you to everyone who supported Sunken Press over the past year. We appreciate the community that formed around this project and look forward to what comes next for all of us.

Important information for vote-by-mail voters 🚨
Mail postmark rules have changed. Ballots are now postmarked when processed, not when you drop them in the mailbox—this can cause 1–2 day delays.
If you’re returning your ballot close to Election Day:
• Request a manual postmark at the post office
• Use a secure drop box
• Deliver directly to your election office
Don’t risk a late postmark. Make sure your vote counts. 🗳️

We got to bug out with one of the area's coolest artists. We also discussed the dangers of being a monkey barber, and you'll never guess what Cory put in his mouth.

This is one for the ages. Kaylin Gauthier killed it.

We love platforming voices from marginalized communities in times they find themselves under duress from an oppressive system of power.

This is a fantastic piece that humanizes an issue that affects so many people. A lot of them are being forced to stay quiet by ignorance.

If you have something to say that fits our values, email us at [email protected]. We'd love to platform you.

I didn't want to support Spotify anymore, but I wanted to info dump about music. Based on Miles Ahead, a great album by Alton's very own Miles Davis, Miles Behind is a music blog dedicated to Cory's picks of the best albums that dropped on each day of history that week.

Let us know what you think of it, and share it with your friends if you like it!
