Sunken Press

Sunken Press In 1837, an angry mob in Alton, IL killed abolitionist journalist Elijah Lovejoy after throwing three of his presses into the Mississippi.

Upon his death, his fourth press joined them in the depths. We are here to honor his memory and avenge him. Alton may be the town that killed him, but since he decided it was worth his martyrdom, it deserves continued stewardship and vigilance. Enter Sunken Press, hosted by Cory Davenport, a local journalist with more than a decade of experience covering the region, Sunken Press wants to solve the

world's problems in our own backyard. He is joined by Nicole Gory, a person with textured life experience involving homelessness, addiction, poverty, single motherhood, and issues facing those whose perspectives fall through the cracks of mainstream journalism. Join us as we ask tough questions, share our worldviews, and challenge any preconceived notions we have regarding our community, our nation, our world, and how all of them fit together.

Happy Labor Day, Sunken Pressketeers!

To celebrate the international workers of the world who have toiled under the yoke of oppressive systems to better our quality of life and build the marvels that make humanity human, you should treat yourself to our Patreon and listen to our interview with Joe Exotic.

That's right, we got ourselves 15 minutes with the Tiger King himself. He said we could ask him about anything, so we did all we could in the time allotted.

We should absolutely note we do not approve of the animal living conditions displayed in that documentary. We also do not believe Joe is innocent of the accusations of animal abuse. We also do not condone his transphobic Facebook posts and a sundry bunch of other issues with his character.

That all being said, it's a surprise he's the only person from that show in jail right now, and, despite our many issues with his overall character, one has to ask if he deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison when some of the people who have testified against him recanted that in the second season of Tiger King and other folks who have done even worse to more animals are walking free.

This is heavier than you may think as we talk about multiple abuses against human beings in the federal prison system.

We're working on a deeper dive video to put the interview in proper context that will act as our season finale later this month.

Nicole here!
No column this week as I've been busy af.
I would feel bad about it but last summer I didn't want to live and now I'm making up for that.
I will leave you with some generic but timeless advice though and a small request:

Keep on going. You're not done yet.
This world is violent AND filled with love.
There is so much pain AND there is so much joy.
You are tired AND you are strong .
Two things can be true at the same time.

Please consider attending one or both of these events put together by Foster's Light in the Dark. I'll be out there tonight. We can cry together and commit to living our best life in memory of the loved ones we have lost.

So, September is the unofficial start of "Spooky Season." Personally I (Cory) want to celebrate sooner. What's a better way to do it than listening to a spooky playlist and taking cruise roads all night? I mean, maybe listening to old Coast to Coast AM episodes...

However, if you're looking for some groovy jams for a late night cruise, look no further. We have you covered with our awesome Friday night playlist.

Tonight's photo of the night comes to us from the amazing Sam Dublo. Of course it's of some native ecology! This one is a crab spider hunting inside a blanket flower. We apologize profusely to all our arachnophobic fans out there!

In this episode, we discuss the heavy topics of su***de, addiction, trauma, and hope with the founder of Foster's Light in the Dark.

Nicole booked this interview and took the driver's seat as this story hits incredibly close to home for her.

While this interview is heavy, it is also heartwarming and hopeful. But, be mindful of these topics going into it.

In this heavy and heartwarming episode of Sunken Press, we speak to Christina Foster Beegle, president of Foster's Light in the Dark, about her powerful jour...

Here's the latest update to our ongoing coverage of the Bethalto water discoloration. We are anticipating official IEPA results, so we can bring closure to this mystery once and for all. However, more testing done with water samples as well as testing of a child's hair has given residents more to ponder, as each has returned high levels of manganese.

That being said, the Village of Bethalto asserts the water is safe to drink, and many residents have told us this isn't as large of an issue as it seems and they are happy to drink the water.

This, of course, is part of an ongoing investigation into the matter. We will continue to update it as it develops.

Residents are still demanding answers following alarming results

Cory and Producer Ryan are working on a cool story regarding a local business owner's push for Alton to have a riverfront skate park. Such a place could be an iconic destination for tourism. Courtney McLaughlin of CJ's Juicery herself travels around the country to roll around such parks.

We at Sunken Press personally love it. Cory as an Altonian and Ryan as both an Altonian and a skater think it'd be pretty neat.

If you agree, here's a petition to let your voice be heard on the matter.

So, I (Cory) forgot the photo of the night last night, so here's tonight's photo of the night by one of our favorite local photographers Tom Warner of a cool classic car. It makes me long for fall, so I can take my wife on spooky cruises in my (much younger) classic car.

Since I forgot last night, I'm throwing in a pic of some street corn from Taqueiria Maya my wife and I just ate. Because it was delicious.

In this edition of Sunken Secrets, Cory dives into the word Piasa and retells his own spooky experiences in the forests around his childhood creek named after the town's mascot. Wait, did I say after?

Because according to old French maps, the creek was named before the bird.

But what does it all mean?

Our paid subscribers will find out ;)

Let's look at the word "Piasa"

Local state representatives have released a joint statement confirming the involvement of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) in Bethalto water testing.

This is following independent testing done by concerned citizens showing dangerous levels of manganese in the water. At this time, Bethalto Public Works has asserted the water is safe to drink and provided microbiology testing to us.

We are eagerly awaiting further updates from IEPA, the Village of Bethalto, and concerned citizens to get to the bottom of this continuing issue.

If you have any news tips, feel free to message us on here or at [email protected].

Usually stuff like this is kept behind a paywall, but we decided to make this paranormal story free for everyone as part of our Tuesday Top 10 sagas.

If you, like me (Cory), are interested in sundry paranormal topics beyond the realm of just ghosts, consider subscribing to our Substack and/or Patreon. You can also buy our merch on Threadless.

Anyway, I know some of you UAP-heads will be very interested in the best places around to go looking for strange objects in the sky.

Based on past sightings, anyway
