Sunken Press

Sunken Press In 1837, an angry mob in Alton, IL killed abolitionist journalist Elijah Lovejoy after throwing three of his presses into the Mississippi.

Upon his death, his fourth press joined them in the depths. We are here to honor his memory and avenge him. Alton may be the town that killed him, but since he decided it was worth his martyrdom, it deserves continued stewardship and vigilance. Enter Sunken Press, hosted by Cory Davenport, a local journalist with more than a decade of experience covering the region, Sunken Press wants to solve the

world's problems in our own backyard. He is joined by Nicole Gory, a person with textured life experience involving homelessness, addiction, poverty, single motherhood, and issues facing those whose perspectives fall through the cracks of mainstream journalism. Join us as we ask tough questions, share our worldviews, and challenge any preconceived notions we have regarding our community, our nation, our world, and how all of them fit together.

Halloween may be spooky season, but we always find winter to be the prolonged season of the best ghost stories. So, we invited local ghost expert Troy Taylor on the show to discuss history, ghosts, and true crime.

We say this all the time, but this is one of our best episodes. Troy is an incredible storyteller and is so informed on so many interesting subjects. Miss this at your own peril.

We brought in Alton’s own master of the macabre, true crime historian, and ghost expert Troy Taylor to separate truth from fiction in popular ghost stories i...

Many of us loved the snow last Saturday, but it really interfered with Small Business Saturday, a day many local businesses rely upon for their holiday revenue. That sucks, but the good news is that there is still time to shop local, and it doesn't look like snow tomorrow or tonight.

SO GET OUT THERE AND SUPPORT OUR AMAZING SMALL BUSINESSES.

Our community deserves it, every day

Now would be a great time to submit stuff to Drag the River or email your own thoughts and opinions to [email protected]! Cory Davenport left what sounds like a weather report regarding tomorrow's snow. It will probably change by the time you hear it. It's already gone from 2-4 to 3-5 inches since this was recorded.

That being said, we urge everyone to be cautious tomorrow. We also encourage everyone to consider ways to support small businesses in this area if the weather is too difficult to navigate tomorrow.

If someone would like to send any helpful how-tos and great tips for navigating winter weather, leave a voicemail on Drag the River! We want to hear from you!

Your opinions often feel like they don't matter these days, but if we continue sharing them, we can change hearts and minds. A better world is possible.

Tell us how you'd build it.

Before you record your own, if you feel self-conscious, listen to what Cory just left us. It's the newest one. The ones before it are much more worthy of listens, but Cory's is, well, it's certainly something.

This episode is one of our favorites.

We interviewed local United Methodist Pastor Kyle Armentrout-Steward regarding his new church opening at The Conservatory this Sunday at 2 p.m.

Before some of you sigh about us including a Jesus person or revel that we did, just know that this is one of the most insightful and compassionate conversations we've ever had.

Kyle is a fantastic conversationalist, and we got to speak about church, the history of the Methodist movement, progressive politics, and what it's like to be an open and safe place for members of the LGBTQ+ community.

He did a great job, and now we (most of us are agnostic or atheist) want to attend his church.

It sounds beautiful.

What happens when two people discarded by Christianity get into a conversation with a United Methodist pastor? If that pastor is Kyle Armentrout-Steward, the...

We hope you didn't buy into the big box consumerism that comes with Black Friday. Everything is a scam.

Here's Cory's take on why you shouldn't partake in consumerist culture. Not only is it propaganda designed to spend money you don't have, it is also engineered to fail so you spend even more sooner.

Wishing you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving from the Sunken Press newsroom!

Here's a Thanksgiving Day address from our editor, Cory, who is calling on the community to celebrate the true hero of the season, the forest, and possibly the entirety of North America - the turkey.

And, yeah, Land Back!

Um, Sunken Sermon time?

Oddly enough, this piece flows into this week's guest on the podcast. We cannot wait to show you our last interview.
