Alsace is a colorful place! This cabinet- now in a museum-is typical of a 19th century home in an area that has changed hands many times. Photos like this help you understand how your ancestors lived, and also about your own tastes. Great to add to your book, too! This is from Kraemer Families in Alsace, France: My 20-year Search for a French Army Soldier, by Joyce Draganchuk.

Getting lucky! It’s always thrilling to find a painting in a museum that depicts a piece of your family’s history. This view of the village of Deinum, seen from Ritzumazjl, was painted in 1844 by Jacob Symons Bonga and perfectly fits a description of a family birth ‘in a ship’. From the Fries Museum, Leeuwarden, Friesland, Netherlands.

A moment in time: last week’s bride, Lydia DePiero, with her father and siblings, ca. 1910. She’s on the far left. Family grouping photos, like this father with his children, are fascinating and soulful - and reproduce beautifully in books.
