Avoiding contact with the ground will keep you warmer. Just because you don’t have a purpose made pad doesn’t mean you have to lay on the ground. These tricks can also help you save time and keep a lower profile. Several times I have actually taken a nap as demonstrated, with a poncho pulled over myself and my gear, and woken up to feral hogs foraging around me.

Keeping yourself from coming in direct contact with the ground is critical for retaining body heat. This trick might not add much more insulation but when it’s cold enough you’ll take what you can get. It does help when you need to get a few minutes of sleep but can’t unpack your entire sleep system.

I share a lot of firecraft content. Besides showing success for entertainment value (most people don’t care to watch failures) I like to think that I’ve put in the time and effort to be proficient in this skill and truth be told I’m more successful than I’m not.
That being said, part of my proficiency comes from being able to accept and learn from failures. At the moment I’m the furthest north I’ve ever been in my life so I decided to take the time to get some practice in. I tried for 5 hours to get a fire started and I couldn’t do it. The closest I got was creating an ember, which typically is the hardest part, but of course I messed up and accidentally flicked it while it was in the tinder bundle. Taking video always makes things a little harder and there’s also the fact that it was -3F so I’ll cut myself a little slack but I failed. Just another learning opportunity.

Temperatures were in the single digits, snow was falling, and the wind was blowing a bit, but an unexpected surprise made it worth it. As we got to the ridge line and peeked over we spotted a herd of caribou. They must have seen us too because they took off to the other side of the slope, but it was still a treat seeing them.

Ice breaking drills often have participants recite or even sing something, to show they still have cognitive function while getting over the initial cold shock from falling into cold water. I have no idea why this was the first song that came to my mind but it served its purpose.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about blowing an ember into a flame. I don’t always like taking the time to create one. Here I’m just using an ember from the previous night’s fire.

I’ve been helping to teach a class aimed at familiarizing Airmen with living in a cold climate. Personally I wouldn’t call it a survival course, but I think it’s a worthwhile class for people who otherwise wouldn’t take the time to spend a night outside in the cold.
For someone who doesn’t do this professionally I think I had a decent amount of experience teaching outdoor skills to a wide variety of people through taking friends out and volunteering with youth groups but it’s always interesting to see students put what they’ve learned into practice. Personally my approach to teaching is to give as thorough of an explanation and demonstration as I can, but then be more lenient and let students make acceptable mistakes as they give it a go. I see some very interesting things but I think giving people a chance to make mistakes and see what does and doesn’t work while in a training environment is important.

Leaving trash and disrespecting wild spaces is always disgusting but especially doing it in a place as gorgeous as Alaska infuriates me.
I took my wife and daughter out to show them a place I had camped out. I was excited to show them my site but the first thing we saw when we pulled up was a recently abandoned fire still smoldering, and a squirrel carcass discarded on the ice.
What sort of pathetic mental/moral state does a person have to be in to look at all the nature beauty around them and then be okay with trashing it like this? What a piss-poor level of existence.
At least we were able to teach our daughter a lesson. We didn’t make the mess, but we appreciate these places and we try to conduct ourselves accordingly. Leave it better than you found it.

Throwback from while I was stationed in New Mexico. I love snakes. Not having snakes is one of the things that disappoints me about living in Alaska.

This show never gets old.

My wife got a little fire starting practice while we were on a day hike. Per her request I was not allowed to help 🤐
