Hall was a black cook and landlord in Ann Arbor Michigan who collected her favorite recipes in a journal between 1920 and 1939, and now, my alma mater, The University of Michigan (University of Michigan Press ), has published her journal for the first time. There are 50 recipes from family and friends with an introduction from Jessica Kenyatta Walker, scholar of African America history and foodways. Last night at Zingerman's Roadhouse celebrating Juneteenth & the release of the Ella E. Hall Recipe Book was wonderful. Amazing food and speakers, plus joyful conversation with our community. The bakehouse did a great job recreating a Lady Baltimore Cake recipe that Ella loved! University of Michigan Library
