Sorry for the lack of content lately, I’ve been busy busy busy!! Here’s a bookish meme to hold you over until I can be back on my medieval bullsh1t 😂

Have you ever read a book and thought yes… finally… a character whose struggles and flaws and growth I relate to!

Only to discover that the entire internet absolutely loathes them?! 🥲
Like, am I taking this personally? Maybe a little! Is this a sign I need more therapy? OH ABSOLUTELY YES! 😂
Which book characters do you relate to the most?!

Coming at you with another Medieval (and Early Modern) Monday tonight... this time in the form of a ✨rant✨

I know y’all are probably used to medieval book recommendations and fun video edits in this, but sometimes you’ve got SOMETHING TO SAY and just have to SAY IT.

Yes, there are anachronisms in medieval retellings and fantasy events or Renaissance Faires. No, that isn’t a BAD thing. And leveraging anachronism to make people feel bad about having fun with history (usually women and nonbinary folks, let’s be real...) is NOT the flex you think it is.

Nor is it a flex to be pedantic, insist you’re right when the facts don’t back you up, or show up on posts with the intention of condescending rather than engaging in good faith.

So put on your fairy wings, go to that Ren Faire or Medieval Reenactment and HAVE FUN ROOTED IN A LOVE OF THE TIME PERIOD! Strive for historical accuracy when it’s called for—and embrace your inner whimsy when it isn’t! 😍

I’VE FIGURED IT ALL OUT except I have in fact figured NOTHING out and no one has ever had a more off base theory ever 😂🙃

Honestly, I DO think I have a pretty good nose for where a plot is going, but every now and then a book totally surprises me and I’m just sitting there like “I can’t believe I was so wrong!”

I love those moments though because speculating and theorising is part of the fun, and it’s even better if an author can make my jaw hit the floor despite my overthinking!

What were or are your craziest book theories (whether or not they ended up being true?!)

Taking a page from the immortal Sarah Smith ‘s book today with my (first ever??) Last Now Next!

I’m trying to mix in more graphic content and actually talk about what I’m reading it when I’m reading it on here, so you’ll have to bear with me as I get my bearings with it all, but I’ve been blasting through some AMAZING fantasies and sci-fi reads recently that I’m so excited to talk about!!

Heir of Prophecy was a 5 star listen for me and I really enjoyed my read of The Tainted Cup—I’ll definitely be continuing with the series (cheers for an older FMC and disability representation!)

Now, I’m diving into Fortune’s Wake by C. L. Clark // Cherae and LOVING it so far (thank you Grimdark Magazine !) and starting my audio read of Maya: Seed Takes Root which is AMAZINGLY narrated by Hugo Weaving!

Tempest by Queen Victoria Aveyard and the audio of The Tethered God by Noah Brisk are up next—very different vibes but i’ve heard nothing but great things about both, so you can expect my reviews soon!

What are your last, current, and next reads?!

Hear ye, hear ye! Gather ‘round medieval fantasy readers, because I’m back with another MEDIEVAL MONDAY, and since you loved my medieval fantasy recs NOT set in England, I figured I’d give you all a part 2! ⚔️🥀

This time around, we’ve got books set in (or with fantasy worlds inspired by!) cultures like Medieval Turkey, Medieval Denmark, the Holy Roman Empire, Feudal Japan, Tang Dynasty China—and more!

As always, I think it’s so interesting how many different countries had a robust and fascinating medieval period, and I love seeing how each culture’s history manifests in medieval fantasy! Some of these have your quintessential knights and castles, but others touch on mythologies I experienced for the first time through these books ❤️

I’m always on the lookout for diverse medieval fantasy, so if you’ve read any others that AREN’T set in England please share them below so I can check them out! In particular, it’d be great to find more books inspired by the medieval Middle East and Africa!

Have you read any of these medieval fantasies (or are you adding them to your TBR?!)

But why is all the mead gone?! 😭🏴‍☠️

Renaissance Festival season is BACK and you just know a mead stand hates to see us coming in our maiden and pirate outfits 😂

Between the shopping and magic shows and demos, we had so much fun at Oakenmist Renaissance Faire and believe it or not we actually HAD NOT partaken in mead when we filmed this, but we were having so much fun with the absolutely insane editing and it just fit. We did bring some mead home with us though—it’s got to hold us over until the Maryland Renaissance Festival starts up in a few weeks!

What’s your favorite thing to do at the Renaissance Faire?! Let me know in the comments! 😍⚔️

I’m firmly in my audiobook & immersive read era, and finishing the Heir of Prophecy audiobook (which I ADORED by the way!) made me think about all those books that just ✨work✨ as an audiobook or immersive read.

Keep in mind that these are just my opinions—an audiobook that works for me might not work for you and a book I prefer as a physical read you might enjoy much more as an audiobook! One thing that’s not an opinion, though? Audiobooks ABSOLUTELY count as reading!!

So if any of these science fiction and fantasy book recommendations are on your TBR (and they absolutely should be!) here’s how I PERSONALLY think they’re best experienced! And of course, special love goes out to all of the audiobook narrators who brought these amazing characters to life!

Are there any books you think MUST be experienced as an audiobook? Any that work better for you as a physical read?! Let me know in the comments!

Be real with me… is it time I give up on second chance (contemporary) romance? 😭

I just finished Love Overboard by Kandi Steiner and while the audiobook was SO well done and I had a lot of fun with the concept, it ended up being a 3 star read for me because I couldn’t find it in my heart to actually GIVE the MMC a second chance 🙃

I do think that it’s mainly a “me” issue—I don’t mind the miscommunication trope, but I HATE seeing the romantic leads with other people and I find it really hard to forgive someone who’s actively engaging in a new relationship in front of the FMC’s face.

I know not all second chance romances have that particular element, but in general I so often come away really not wanting to forgive him, which makes it so hard to root for the romance itself!

Do you have this issue with the second chance trope?! Are there any second chance romances that DIDN’T make you feel this way?! Let me know because I’m willing to try again… but the trope is on thin ice! 😂

If Richard Swan writes it and Grimdark Magazine publishes it… yeah, I’m going to read it!

I’m a massive fan of the Empire of the Wolf universe so obviously I can’t WAIT for the prequel novella! I’m not sure what it says about me that a demonic witch, a dangerous fugitives, and a town riddled with plague sounds like the absolute best time, but as a grimdark reader I truly can’t get enough of this world!

René Aigner Shawn T. King and the Grimdark Magazine team knocked this cover out of the park and I’m so excited to start reading!

Have you read anything by Richard Swan yet?!
