🇺🇸If you’re in Downtown Enterprise tonight or tomorrow morning, you may see something that has become a familiar sight in our community: American flags being given away by City of Enterprise, Ala. resident Adam Beasley.
He will be downtown tonight (Thursday) until 6:30 p.m. and again Friday (September 11) from 7 to 10:30 a.m., giving away American flags to anyone who would like one.
But for Adam, it’s about much more than handing out flags.
As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, Adam reflected on what he remembers most about that day.
He was working in a hangar at Fort Rucker when the attacks happened. There were no smartphones or instant updates. He learned what was happening through an FM radio, and because Fort Rucker was locked down, he didn’t see the events unfolding on television until the following morning.
What stands out to him most after 25 years isn’t just what happened that day. It’s what happened afterward.
People came together.
He believes that sense of unity is something we should not lose sight of.
His love of our country and the American flag comes from his family. He describes patriotism simply: supporting your country and showing that support.
“People fought and died so we can have what we have.”
Adam has also seen firsthand how different life can be in countries where those freedoms do not exist. His family lived in Saudi Arabia for a time while his father worked there, while Adam remained in the United States to attend high school. The experience gave him a lasting appreciation for the freedoms Americans sometimes take for granted.
“I want people to know that we live in the greatest country in the world.”
Every flag Adam gives away was made in America. The flags are donated to him in large quantities so he can continue sharing them with the community.
So if you see Adam downtown, stop by. Take a flag. Fly it proudly.
And as we remember September 11, let’s also remember the way Americans came together in its aftermath, the freedoms we have, and the people who have sacrificed to protect them.
