School districts in California are stepping in to provide affordable housing for faculty and staff

The affordable housing shortage in the U.S. is particularly acute in California, where less than one-third of the state’s households can afford a median-priced home that now tops $600,000, or more than twice the national average.

School districts in California’s priciest regions have had trouble attracting and holding onto K-12 teachers. To address this issue, several of the state’s counties and school districts—including those in Santa Clara, San Francisco, Sonoma County, West Contra Costa, and Mountain View—have either approved the construction of affordable housing for teachers and staff, or are considered it.

HENN has unveiled the design for the Sino-French Aviation University. The concept draws on the traditional culture of Liangzhu, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Yangtze River Delta.

The campus’s central building and its flying roof are the most important design element of the project. The lightweight, concave roof sits atop the main building and opens itself towards the sky, meant to resemble a plane taking off.

In the $90 billion U.S. office construction sector, Class A and Class A+ properties are the darlings of every major metro market. Owners and developers of these amenity-rich, high-performance buildings are competing to lure top-notch tenants.

There’s certainly plenty of money to be made in building and rehabbing Class A office buildings. But what about their less-flashy counterparts, Class B and Class C properties?

A new Urban Land Institute report, researched in partnership with the Rocky Mountain Institute and the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), suggests that there is significant “hidden value” waiting to be unlocked by owners of Class B/C properties.

Higher-income renters continue to drive what’s getting built and leased in the multifamily sector

Starts of buildings with five or more housing units rose from December 2018 through December 2019 by 74.6% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 536,000, according to preliminary Census Bureau estimates. At the end of that period, the number of multifamily housing units under construction was up 7.3% to 177,000.

However, the seemingly endless demand for multifamily housing could finally be abating. After more than a decade-long runup, renter household growth appears to have plateaued.

Those are some of the findings in “America’s Rental Housing 2020,” the annual report released today by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University.

Sensor technology has been opening doors for everything from precisely measuring the impacts of climate change on sea levels to enabling driverless cars to alerting homeowners when to restock their refrigerators.

These advances are making their way into the built environment, where AEC firms are installing sensors for a variety of tasks that include (but certainly aren’t confined to) monitoring jobsite workers to spot patterns and make safety improvements, tracking equipment and building materials, and integrating BIM models with sensor data to gauge a building’s performance against expectations.

China's Unicorn Island: China has become home to a third of the world’s “unicorn companies,” technology start-ups valued at over a billion US dollars, with Chengdu, the capital of the Sichuan province, developing into a hub where the computer chips for half the world’s laptops are produced. There, Unicorn Island, a 67-hectare island master planned by Zaha Hadid Architects to house these start-up companies, is well under way. Its first building, the Start-Up exhibition and conference center, is nearing completion. #unicornisland #zahahadidarchitects #startups @zahahadidarchitects

After an international design competition, RMJM Shanghai was selected to design the Xiangjiang Gate in Hengyang, China. The 580-foot-tall tower’s design is deeply rooted in the history of the city. From above, the central, twisting towers look like a narrow stream of water passing through two pieces of land, paying tribute to the geographical location of the city and to its “convergent spirit.” When viewed upside down, the building resembles a goose flying through the sky, an homage to ancient Chinese poetry. 01/16/2020

The medical office and industrial sectors will drive what is expected to be moderate growth in the commercial real estate market this year, predict the real estate advisory teams of Transwestern and Devencore located in 43 U.S. and Canadian metros.

The biggest potential impediments to that growth could be rising build-out costs and regulations on how medical tenants can use space.

A new survey finds that conditions for the U.S. office market, while expected to improve, might still be down slightly from the previous year’s outlook.
