Presenting the logo and patch design for the 2023 Chain Bridge District - National Capital Area Council, BSA Pinewood Derby!
This year marks the 70th anniversary of this beloved annual tradition.
In 1953, "Soapbox Derby Fever" was sweeping the nation. Kids would build go-cart-sized cars out of wood and wheels, and then race them down the biggest hill in town. Mr. Don Murphy, the Cubmaster of Pack 280C in Manhattan Beach, CA, proposed a clever (and much safer!) way to let Cub Scout-aged kids (like his 10-year-old son, Donn) get in on the Soapbox Derby fun. With a parent, each scout would build a miniature car out of a 7" block of pinewood, four nails, and four wheels. On race day, the competitors would race their creations down a 30-foot-long inclined wooden track.
In his day job, Mr. Murphy was an art director at North American Aviation, a major aircraft manufacturer based in nearby Los Angeles. He pitched his idea for the Pinewood Derby to the North American Management Club, who agreed to sponsor Pack 280C's inaugural race.
The rest is history.
Today, 70 years later, millions upon millions of Pinewood Derby cars have been built and raced since that first race in 1953.
In honor of Mr. Murphy and North American Aviation's role in the first Pinewood Derby, this year's patch design features the bird from North American Aviation's early 1950s logo, "reimagined" as a Pinewood Derby racer.
Sure, with those wings, it'd be WAY too wide for an actual PWD car. Chalk it up to "artistic license." ;)
The Chain Bridge District Pinewood Derby will be held on Saturday, March 11, at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Hall in Arlington, Virginia.
