The other team broke the rules, so you should always take the free yards, right?

Not necessarily.

When an NFL penalty happens, the team that was fouled can usually accept the penalty or decline it and keep the result of the play.

If the defense jumps offsides but the offense gains 25 yards, why accept only five?

If the offense commits holding during an interception, the defense may decline the penalty so it can keep possession of the football.

Accept or decline?

The answer is whichever outcome helps your team more.

Would you rather have a five-yard penalty or a 25-yard gain?

When an announcer says a linebacker just “shot the A-gap”… where exactly did he go?

There aren’t actually letters on the field.

A, B, C and D gaps are names for the spaces between offensive linemen, and they help offenses and defenses communicate exactly where a run, blitz or defensive assignment is supposed to happen.

Once you know where the gaps are, NFL commentary starts making a LOT more sense.

Save this for the next time you hear “A-gap pressure.”

RPOs and play-action passes may look exactly the same, but they are not the same play.

On play-action, the pass has already been called. The quarterback fakes the handoff to fool the defense.

On an RPO, the quarterback reads a defender after the snap and makes a real-time decision between handing the ball off or throwing it.

Play-action is a pass disguised as a run. An RPO is a real choice between the run and pass.

NFL coin toss rules explained.

Winning the coin toss does not automatically give your team the football. It gives the team the right to choose between receiving, kicking or deferring.

Receive means you get the ball now.

Kick means you willingly give the opponent the ball, but you still may not receive after halftime.

Defer means you save your first choice for the second half, which is why most NFL teams choose it.

What would you choose: receive, kick or defer?
