Much has been written about the Southern Pacific Railroad. A focus of wealth, power and political control in the Golden State, Southern Pacific was on the scene, close behind the Spanish, molding and shaping the California we know today. And nowhere is this more evident than in the San Joaquin Valley. Pioneer Central Pacific entered the valley building south out of Lathrop in the fall of 1870, reaching Tipton in the very heart of the San Joaquin Valley in late July 1872. At this point, Southern Pacific continued the work. Surmounting the Tehachapi, the railroad forked with one line heading to The Needles on the Colorado River, and the other to Los Angeles, which was opened for traffic in 1876. Along the way, the railroad founded and platted many of the cities that exist today. For instance, Fresno was surveyed and staked out in May 1872 in an area where there was no habitation, and “the ground was like a graveled school yard.” Accumulating vast land grants in the process, SP had land to sell, and built branch lines to new and promising areas, promoting the potential profits to be made by eastern farmers. At its zenith, prior to World War II, the San Joaquin Division encompassed a little over 876 miles of first main track. This volume covers the rise and fall of this great enterprise, from its initial construction to its expansion, and sadly, its decline through 1996. While including new information and many unpublished photos from the mountains, it also covers in depth the vast network of secondary and branch lines that once formed part of the division.

In 1981, Ron Crowd turned a dream into reality when he purchased the Washington County Branch from the Delaware & Hudson, establishing the Batten Kill Railroad. Over the next four decades, this colorful short line evolved through changing times, while its dedicated railroaders kept the trains — and traditions — rolling. Nestled between the Taconic and Berkshire mountain ranges in rural eastern New York, the Batten Kill Railroad continues to serve its agricultural customers much as its predecessors, Delaware & Hudson and Greenwich & Johnsonville, did more than a century ago.

While the railroad is perhaps best known for its diverse roster of vintage Alco diesel locomotives, a visit offers much more than the thrill of chasing trains. Within this volume — featuring a remarkable collection of largely unpublished photographs — you will discover scenes of pastoral beauty, charming rural communities, railroaders at work, and, of course, classic Alco power. More than 50 photographers contributed to this volume, creating a tapestry of work that could not be captured by a single lens alone. Whether you’ve experienced this railroad firsthand or are discovering it for the first time, these photographs and stories bring to life the unique charm and quiet strength of a place we proudly call “Batten Kill Country.”

Gateway Western – A Regional in Transition documents the troubled and challenging history of an essential segment of Midwestern railroading. The result of years of research, this book covers the Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City lines of the former Illinois Central Gulf (originally Chicago & Alton/Gulf, Mobile & Ohio) as they were spun off in the late 1980s. The first attempt was Chicago, Missouri & Western, which quickly ran into financial difficulty. With these critical rail transportation hubs and Amtrak service between Chicago and St. Louis in jeopardy, a combination of events brought Santa Fe and others to the table, resulting in the creation of Gateway Western. Authors Ryan Crawford, James E. Lewnard, and Matthew Freix share the history of both regionals (Chicago, Missouri & Western, and Gateway Western) in this new book, which contains more than 200 pages. A wealth of color photos takes the reader across the system, shows the equipment, and tells the story of this fascinating chapter in Midwest railroading. The book includes coverage of Amtrak, Kansas City Southern, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, and other roads that were associated with this regional operation.

Take a journey along a transcontinental railroad first laid out by the Northern Pacific Railway in 1881 through Montana and North Dakota.

This historic line helped settle the American West through the rugged badlands and rolling prairies. It connects the Yellowstone River town of Glendive in eastern Montana with the Missouri River town of Mandan, North Dakota, near Bismarck.

In the two hundred miles of what BNSF calls its Dickinson Subdivision, you will see a variety of trains from short locals to long unit trains lugging over 250 cars.

Two of the biggest commodities are coal shipped from the Powder River Basin and grain loaded at numerous facilities around the state. Along with the unit trains, mixed manifests roll between rail hubs scattered across the BNSF system.

In the panhandle of northwestern Nebraska, coal trains from Wyoming’s Powder River Basin battle a mountain grade through an epic setting. On the BNSF timetable, this is a thirteen-mile section of the Butte Subdivision between Alliance, Nebraska and Edgemont, South Dakota. Railroaders and railfans know it as Crawford Hill.

The double-track main line is a coal conveyor belt pitched on a 1.55% grade. Manned helpers assist heavy coal trains to the summit at Belmont, then drift back down the hill for the next shove. Trains roar through Crawford as they get a run at the hill, but soon they are on their knees, grinding around Breezy Point. Once east of the crossovers at Belmont, the helpers disconnect on the fly.

The incredible horseshoe curves and deep cuts through the Pine Ridge escarpment provide an unlimited number of exciting locations to watch and photograph trains. Both line-side and aerial photography were used to capture the majesty of this area on screen.
