Jared Pearce has a new poetry book out called "Down Their Spears."

Told in a single poem, "Down Their Spears" is a Latter-Day Saint cosmogony. Each of the poem's nine sections is told by a different speaker in a different place at a different time, from sixth century BCE India to nineteenth century Illinois, and each speaker offers a different part of the myth that weaves religious, historical, and mystical characters, scenes, and ideals to tell the story of the history of the universe through a novel, Mormon perspective.

Jared Pearce has another poem placed, "The resurrection and the life" in the Otis Nebula. Here's an excerpt below:

Can’t outrun the fire of death, so when
the wind dragged the flames to Hualqui,
mom stopped, ditched her daughters,
planted her seeds, pushed the world’s hands
in its pocket, like a man

reentering his mother’s womb.

Congratulations to our poet Jared Pearce for being nominated for the Pushcart Prize! Read his poem "Illness" below:

ILLNESS

It's like waiting for the elevator
doors to release me, letting this
virus run its course. Nothing
will rub it out or bribe it, just
the clicking of days; like sitting

through meetings or finding
the next politician, so many
minutes have to expire, then
life can resume its function
toward beauty, rather then

waiting for the clothes to dry
or the shower to open or food
to cook or cool or be available
or the child to walk to stop walking
or the girl to love and keep loving.

It's Publication Day for “Roadworthy" by Dave Mehler!

This unique collection of lyrical and narrative poems is inspired by the poet's experiences as a long-haul truck driver in the US. Beneath the surface of the truck-driving subject matter, metaphysical and ethical questions are posed: does mundane work matter and can it be meaningful; is beauty or practicality inherently more valuable; does personal evil exist, and if so, how should we respond? The reader is invited to draw their own conclusions.

"Roadworthy" is now available on Amazon and Aubade Publishing website: https://aubadepublishing.com/books/roadworthy/

With wit and complexity, Rochelle Distelheim takes on Russian and Israeli cultures whose differences are daunting and she manages to represent both with convincing detail and, most importantly, with sympathy.

Pearce & Loprete – May 2020

Ever thought about the relationship between visual and written art? Our poet Jared Pearce has participated in a really cool project called the Light Ekphrastic which contemplates just that! Jared was asked to write a poem based on someone else's artwork, which you can read here:
https://thelightekphrastic.com/may-2020-issue-42/pearce-loprete-may-2020/.

What's more, Jared himself talks about his writing process below:
"Oil on Concrete" is a response to Mario Loprete's series, The NUMA Crew, a series of oil-on-concrete portraits. For me the tension between the portrait (in oil) and the frame (scrolled concrete) was palpable. I liked thinking about the people in the portraits and how the tension between the oil and the concrete mattered to how the people themselves were both malleable and rigid, changeable and solid. I ended up reading about how to paint on concrete, concrete expansion ratios, and reflecting on a lot of my childhood friends who seemed echoed in several of the portraits. In the end, I hope the poem is an image of the portrait series and a comment on how all of us are in a state of static flux: we can change, but maybe don't want to, we're brittle and scared, but looking to hold ourselves together. I thought that oil and concrete would make for a good metaphor for both the portrait series and for people generally.
