📢List of City and County Schools Operating on a One Hour Delay Thursday

Wiregrass — Both Dothan City Schools and Houston County Schools will operate on a one-hour delay Thursday due to the potential for severe weather during the early morning hours.

School officials in both districts say the decision was made as a precaution to allow hazardous weather to move through the area before buses begin their morning routes.

In Dothan City Schools, all school start times will begin one hour later than their normal schedules. District officials say school buses will run their regular routes but will operate one hour later than usual. The Dothan City Schools Central Office will also open one hour later than normal.

Houston County Schools will also follow a one-hour delayed schedule for Thursday. District officials said secondary students who were previously scheduled to have a virtual day due to ACT testing will instead attend school in person, following the delayed start schedule.

At Houston County Career Academy (HCCA), morning classes will begin one hour later than normal, starting at 9:15 a.m.

Houston County Schools officials also announced that dual enrollment classes will not meet Thursday for either morning or afternoon sessions.

School leaders say the delay is intended to help protect students, staff, and bus drivers while traveling during potentially hazardous weather conditions. Families are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and plan accordingly.

Abbeville Alabama- On Tuesday, Feb. 24, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Special Agents assigned to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force arrested Rodger Loftin, 54, of Abbeville, as a result of an ongoing child exploitation investigation.

Our Office has receievied multiple calls and messages concerning this incident, however, as stated before we could not release any information due to the fact that this case was being worked by the State.

UPDATE: Wiregrass Daily News reached back out to Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd, who confirmed the incident occurred at Dothan Virtual School, located on the same campus as Dothan Preparatory School.

Byrd also confirmed the male subject was 41 years old. The name is not being released by WDNews due to the circumstances.

Tragedy Reported at Dothan Virtual School

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — An employee has died following an incident Wednesday afternoon at Dothan Virtual School.

According to authorities, Dothan Police were dispatched around 4:20 p.m. after receiving a call in reference to a self-inflicted hanging at the school. Officers responded to the scene and began an investigation.

Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd confirmed the death to Wiregrass Daily News.

Dothan City Schools Public Relations Officer Karris Harmon said the district is aware of the situation and is cooperating with law enforcement.

“We are aware of an incident involving an employee and are investigating. Dothan Police Department are also investigating,” Harmon said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
