Sunrise broke over the hills of South Point, Ohio just as the M/V Frank Chopp eased through the Port of Ashland — golden light pouring across Kentucky’s shoreline while the Ohio ran calm but quick, extra brown from the week’s churn.

Recently acquired by Borghese Lane LLC and formerly Kirby’s Susan Elizabeth, this twin‑screw workhorse pushed upriver with a load of stone and aggregate. Built in 1990 with a Taylor Marine hull and finished by Horton Shipyard, she measures 81' x 30' and carries CAT 3512 diesels rated at 2,400 hp, feeding Reintjes red 3.905:1 gears.

A new name, a new banner, same river grind.

M/V Brees is a hard‑working twin‑screw towboat built in 2011 by Horizon Shipbuilding—120 feet long, 35 feet wide, and all muscle. She’s driven by a pair of CAT C280‑6 Tier II diesels throwing down 4,720 horsepower through Lufkin red 4.037:1 gearing, a setup built for steady push and long miles.

She runs under Florida Marine Transporters, LLC, carrying that familiar FMT workboat attitude as she moves freight up and down the inland rivers. Seen here under soft white skies, she slides past the riverbanks of Ironton, Ohio and Russell, Kentucky, cutting a clean line through the Ohio River like a boat that knows her job and does it well.
