November 5, 1935. New York City.

Edwin Howard Armstrong stood before the Institute of Radio Engineers with a paper titled "A Method of Reducing Disturbances in Radio Signaling by a System of Frequency Modulation."

Then he turned on his invention—and the room fell silent.

Not because nothing was happening. Because for the first time in history, radio was silent. No crackle. No static. No distortion. Just pure, crystalline sound.

A voice came through his speakers as clearly as if the person were standing in the room.

Music played without the hiss and pop that had plagued every radio since Marconi.

Armstrong had invented FM radio.

And he'd just made every AM station in America obsolete.

It should have been his triumph.

Instead, it became his death sentence.

Armstrong wasn't some amateur tinkerer.

He was already one of the most important inventors in radio history.

In 1912, he'd invented the regenerative circuit, which made radio receivers actually practical.

In 1918, he created the superheterodyne receiver—still the foundation of nearly every radio and TV today.

He'd made radio work when everyone else was still struggling with the basics.

But every invention put him at war with the corporations that controlled American radio: AT&T, Westinghouse, and especially RCA, led by the ruthless David Sarnoff.

When Armstrong demonstrated FM in 1935, RCA had a problem.

They'd invested millions in AM radio infrastructure.

They owned the patents, the stations, the equipment manufacturers. FM threatened all of it.

And unlike Armstrong's earlier inventions—which they could license or steal—this one couldn't be controlled.

FM was fundamentally different, fundamentally better, and it made their entire empire vulnerable.

So they destroyed him.

Armstrong built his own FM station network on frequencies between 42 and 50 MHz.

It worked beautifully.

FM stations began appearing across the country.

The future Armstrong had imagined was happening.

Then in 1945, after years of intense corporate lobbying, the FCC made a decision: FM radio would be moved to a new band—88 to 108 MHz.

On paper, it was a technical adjustment. In reality, it was sabotage.

Every FM receiver Armstrong and his allies had built became useless overnight.

Every station had to rebuild from scratch. Years of investment, thousands of radios, an entire network—erased with the stroke of a regulatory pen.

The FCC also limited FM stations to lower power, crippling their reach compared to AM.

RCA pushed television instead, framing FM as obsolete before it even had a chance.

And then came the lawsuits—endless, exhausting patent litigation designed not to win but to drain Armstrong's resources, energy, and will.

For years, he fought. He spent his fortune on legal fees.

His health deteriorated.
His marriage strained under the pressure.

The man who had revolutionized radio three times was being systematically destroyed by the industry he'd helped create.

On the morning of January 31, 1954, Edwin Howard Armstrong put on his overcoat, hat, and gloves.

He wrote a note to his wife, Marion.

Then he opened the window of his 13th-floor Manhattan apartment and stepped out into the winter air.

He was 63 years old.

Marion would later say that RCA didn't just take his inventions—they took his life.

But here's what they couldn't take: the technology itself.

Eventually, FM won.

Not because corporations wanted it, but because it was simply better.

Today, nearly every radio station broadcasts in FM.

Every time you hear music without static, every time a voice comes through clearly, every time you tune to 88.1 or 107.9—that's Armstrong's invention.

He never got to see it triumph.

He died believing he'd failed, that the corporations had beaten him, that his life's work had been for nothing.

He was wrong.

Every song you've ever heard on the radio clearly—without crackle, without distortion—exists because a brilliant engineer refused to accept that static was just "the way radio is."

He imagined something better.

He built it. And when the powerful tried to bury it, his invention survived anyway.

Edwin Howard Armstrong gave us the sound of clarity in a world of noise. And though the corporations silenced his voice, they couldn't silence what he created.

The frequency may have changed.
The stations may have been rebuilt.

But every time you turn on the radio and hear music the way it was meant to be heard, you're listening to the legacy of a man who deserved so much better than what the world gave him.

On Monday Democrats in The Commonwealth of Virginia will call a special session to begin the process of repealing the bipartisan redistricting commission on how we draw lines. If successful (it’s a two legislative year process) - the party in control of the general assembly would draw lines.

The picture below depicts the end goal here. Democrats want to eliminate 3 Republican seats to make Virginia 9-2 Democrat control in Congress.

This is dangerous. This disenfranchises a state that easily has 45-48% republicans

Keep in mind Republicans could get control and we could do the same thing. Do you want that?

I don’t. It’s gross. Democrats can’t have control. Today is Saturday voting. Go vote for the Republican delegate. We have to stop this.

🍎 “Is Greed Keeping King William Kids From Eating for Free?”

Many parents and families in King William have received the dreaded automatic calls from the KWCPS Nutrition Department attempting to collect school meal debt...

But what they don’t know is that the debt, the calls and the bills don’t have to happen at all - if the School Board and Nutrition Director Sherri Harris choose to enroll our schools in a program that would pay for every meal.

Nearly 70% of Virginia’s public schools are enrolled in something called the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) - a federal program that allows schools with enough low-income students (25% or more) to serve free breakfast and lunch to every student no matter what their family’s financial situation - no applications, no meal debt, no stigma.

And according to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) CEP Eligibility Report, KWCPS easily qualifies.

The most recently reported (September) KWCPS meal debt is $20,671.85,

(AES $2,706.54, CSPS $1,084.93, HHMS $2,641.29, KWHS $14,239.09)

181 students owe money for meals, including 41 students with balances over $100 and some nearing $500 each.

More than 870 students in the division already qualify for free or reduced meals - a rate high enough to meet the federal threshold for universal free lunch under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).

(And as of October 2023 USDA rule, the CEP eligibility threshold dropped from 40 % to 25 % identified students, therefore KWCPS not only meets - but exceeds the new federal CEP threshold.)

But instead of eliminating debt and ensuring all students eat for free, families continue to be billed.

Even local donors are asked to step in to cover unpaid lunch balances.

Recently, a generous local citizen donated $1,000 to cover student meal debt – and the School Board and Ms. Harris happily accepted their money, all while knowing a financial program exists that could feed every child in KWCPS for free.

The King William Informer recently sent an email asking the KWCPS School Board, Superintendent and Nutrition Director Sherri Harris why they have not applied to the CEP program even though the district qualifies.

As of this post, they have not replied, but KWI will provide an update as soon as any information is received.

So - the question remains - why wouldn’t Ms. Harris and the School Board want to apply for CEP and help all King William children eat for free?

The King William Informer began an investigation and closely reviewed nearly two years of KWCPS School Nutrition Fund data (Dec 2023 – Aug 2025), board reports, and financial statements.

A shocking and consistent pattern emerged that showed the department appears to be inflating fund balances, minimizing transparency, and may be avoiding participation in a CEP to avoid the oversight that would expose financial manipulation and dishonest practices that have gone on for years.

The KWI investigation revealed the likely explanations for Ms. Harris and KWCPS to not apply for CEP were found to be the following:

1. They’re hoarding a massive surplus

💰The School Nutrition Fund balance has hovered between $450,000 – $550,000.

💰It's far higher than the industry norm (most districts only carry 1–3 months of operating costs).

➡️ Bottom Line: They are taking in more than they are spending.

2. Their reporting is inconsistent - and possibly manipulative

đź’°Month-to-month revenues swing wildly (for example, $29k in one month and $76 k the next) without clear correlation to meal counts or enrollment.

💰USDA commodities - federally supplied food - appear as $0 in every profit/loss statement reviewed, despite the district almost certainly receiving them. That’s a way to make the district look “poorer” than it is.

➡️ Bottom Line: They’re underreporting federal support and overstating “need.”

3. They maintain debt to justify their existence

💰Even with a half-million-dollar surplus, the department continues to bill families and track $20,000 – $25,000 in meal debt.

💰Maintaining that debt gives the appearance of a “funding gap,” when in reality, the shortfall is administrative - not financial.

➡️ Bottom Line: The “debt” sustains a narrative that the department is “underfunded,” which keeps oversight minimal and extra funding flowing.

🧩The overall motive, (as with most government bureaucracies) appears to be administrative self-preservation. KWCPS wants to keep discretionary financial control of large cash reserves and avoid the transparency that CEP participation would require.

🔍This is an ongoing investigation by the King William Informer. The hope is that greater transparency will lead to long-overdue reforms in how school nutrition funds are managed - and, most importantly, that every child in King William will have access to a healthy meal without worrying about how to pay for it.

Comet Lemmon is now faintly visible in a dark sky location very low on the horizon. Viewing should improve drastically this week. You could see the comet as early as 30-45 minutes after sunset, but the best viewing will be about 1.5 hours after sunset. Look in the west/northwest sky low on the horizon. If you find the Big Dipper, Comet Lemmon will be below it closer to the horizon.
