On election day, 115 women of color will be on the ballot for House seats — a record for American politics. Deborah Roberts spoke with 8 of those women across the aisle in a roundtable discussion.

Newberry Library

We're excited to share that hsc.tv's Rosie Nakamura, Autumn Nakamura Neal and Daron Nealis were recently interviewed by Paul Durica, Director of Exhibitions at Newberry Library, about one of our latest (and most topical) projects: a series of World War I-themed COVID-19 PSAs, in which propagandistic imagery of the era is recontextualized within the ongoing pandemic. Check out "Turning WWI Posters into COVID-19 Memes" via Newberry Library below.

In the absence of strong national messaging regarding COVID-19, individuals have taken it upon themselves to call Americans to collective action through memes and other social media-friendly PSAs. The video production company hsc.tv, for example, reimagined WWI propaganda like the iconic Uncle Sam/US Army recruitment poster to convey the importance of social distancing, not hoarding, and stopping the spread of misinformation.

In this video, Paul Durica, the Newberry's Director of Exhibitions, speaks with Rosie Nakamura, Autumn Nakamura Neal, and Daron Nealis of hsc.tv about how they translated historic images into modern memes.

hsc.tv is an Emmy-award winning independent video production company based in New York City with over 20 years experience providing end to end creative solutions for global brands, networks, startups, filmmakers, and nonprofits. Historical non-fiction is an area of particular interest, having collaborated on many projects over the years with HISTORY, BIO, and various museums around the country.

ESPN | SportsCenter | "The Call" Feature Trailer

One of the most important yet under-examined aspects of every NFL season is the life-changing phone call that players receive upon being drafted, turning their lives upside-down in a matter of seconds. While every call is emotional and life-changing, some players' draft day stories are more unusual than others. hsc.tv teamed up with ESPN to tell these stories and examine this long-standing tradition.

How WWI Changed America: The Influenza Pandemic of 1918 - “The Spanish Flu”

World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic, colloquially known as the "Spanish flu", share an intertwined history. By the time of the flu's initial outbreak in 1918, World War I was in its fourth and final year, with a tremendous number of soldiers malnourished and susceptible to infection due to overcrowding and poor hygiene. With these conditions in place, the disease spread aggressively across the globe, ultimately infecting up to one-third of the world's population, according to modern estimates from the CDC.

As the world continues to face the ongoing struggle against COVID-19, hsc.tv would like to share a short form video that we produced in collaboration with the United States Federation for the Commemoration of the World Wars, in which we examine the history of the 1918 influenza pandemic.

For more information on COVID-19 and how you can help stop the spread, go to CDC.gov

Stay safe everybody, from your friends at hsc.tv.

Misinformation PSA

Here's another entry in our series of reimagined WWI posters:

It's crucial to remember to ALWAYS check where your news sources are coming from. During times of crisis, it's only natural that a great deal of misinformation will spread, both intentionally and unintentionally. Don't take everything that you read at face value, especially when the news source is dubious. Do your own research, and be sure to look at credible sources of information, like the CDC website (www.CDC.gov)

Stop Hoarding PSA

Here's another entry in our series of reimagined WWI posters:
It's understandable to want to stock up during this confusing time, but by hoarding supplies such as toilet paper and cleaning products, you're directly preventing others from accessing these necessities, especially those who are older, immunocompromised, or have disabilities. Remember: we're all in this together!

Featuring the voice of President of National City Bank of New York, Frank A. Vanderlip.

Stay safe everyone, from your friends at hsc.tv.

I Want You (To Stay Home)

The last time the world faced a pandemic of this scale was in 1918. A strain of H1N1 influenza, then known as Spanish flu, infected 500 million people and killed at least 50 million. Its spread was exacerbated by WWI, which was still underway at the time. During the war, Woodrow Wilson’s administration created the Committee on Public Information – an agency tasked with producing propaganda to inform the public and inspire ways for everyone to help the war effort. This propaganda included the production of iconic posters that remain recognizable and powerful.

As we face a new pandemic over one hundred years later, we have reimagined some of these posters to inspire and remind us that only in working together will we win this battle.

Featuring the voice of Secretary of State William G. McAdoo
