Helping Out A Brother Member

Dear Brothers, Sisters, and Kin,

Brother Isias “Meno “Payne’s family recently experienced a major medical incident that almost took the life of his wife, Shibinsky Latoya Payne. She has been hospitalized since August 28th, 21. She is now out of the ICU/SICU and will hopefully come home soon. Their hope is that she can be placed on a transplant list soon and have a better quality life. This time has been hard for their family and especially their 9 year old daughter, Iyla who has not been able to see her mother in person since being admitted.

Expenses have added up greatly, and if you are able to help a 52 Brother during these times, any contribution is greatly appreciated. https://gofund.me/8a09a8b6

Dear Brothers, Sisters and Kin,

Today marks the 20th anniversary of one of the darkest days this Country has ever endured. As we pay homage to the nearly 3,000 individuals who perished on September 11, 2001, and the many lives lost due to post 911 related illnesses, we must also recognize the heroism of the Local 52 members that volunteered their time during those tumultuous days. During the first few weeks of the rescue and recovery effort, 134 Local 52 members, Teamsters Local 817, and many equipment vendors came together to provide temporary power and lighting to help aid the first responders in searching for survivors. Without the vital services our members provided, the recovery efforts would have been much more dangerous and could have taken significantly longer. Local 52 members have always stepped up when needed, from the 9/11 attacks, providing assistance during natural disasters, and most recently the Covid 19 pandemic, we thank all of you for your continued efforts, big and small.

We Shall Never Forget.

In Solidarity,
The Executive Board

Repost from @iatse

We all remember where we were on September 11, 2001. For so many of our sisters and brothers, the tragic events of that day were just the beginning of a long struggle that continues to this day.

When the towers fell, union members in New York rallied to Ground Zero to search for survivors and clean up the aftermath. There were police officers and firefighters, of course, but it was IATSE members who placed and operated the lighting equipment that allowed the search and rescue operation to continue 24 hours a day for weeks.

The IATSE didn’t just show up at Ground Zero. Members volunteered their time for memorial services across the city, and worked to help rebuild in the aftermath. This is personal to me, because I was one of them.

The dust that we inhaled in those days has led to complicated health issues for many emergency responders, and many of us are still dealing with the aftermath.

When I published this story earlier this year, IATSE members continued to show up, urging their congresspeople in droves to make the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) permanent. And thanks to their efforts, in June congress extended the 9/11 VCF through 2090.

Today we remember those who lost their lives on that fateful day 18 years ago and all those who worked tirelessly to help us recover and rebuild in the aftermath. But I will also remember my union brothers and sisters for standing for what’s right and supporting the 9/11 community in its time of need.

Following two rebroadcasts of the IATSE PRO Act Webinar last month, it was suggested that an abbreviated version be shared with the general membership of the IATSE. To that end, the IATSE Political/Legislative Department, Education & Training Department, and Legal Department collaborated to produce the following video presentations:

What You Need to Know: The PRO Act in 15 Minutes – https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/recording/2493233192909162241

What You Need to Know: The PRO Act in 2 Minutes – https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/recording/295814124822144514

Both videos, in the allotted time noted in their respective titles, explain how the Protecting the Right to Organize Act will empower America’s workers and inform IATSE members of what they can do to help pass this critical legislation.

To view either recording, follow these three steps:
Click one of the above links
Fill out your name and email address
Click “Register”. You will be automatically redirected to the video.

We hope you find these videos useful as we collectively continue the fight to pass the PRO Act in Congress!

Repost from @iatse

The passing of @aflcio President Richard Trumka is absolutely heartbreaking. Today we lost a giant amongst giants, a stalwart champion of the labor movement, and a dear friend. President Trumka’s leadership was electric and unparalleled, from his early days as president of the @umwaunion through the COVID-19 pandemic. It was an honor to serve alongside him in these difficult times.

President Trumka will be remembered as a legendary labor leader, and we can all honor his memory by carrying forward his life’s work: to ensure that all working people can attain the American Dream. In the words of Mother Jones, “Mourn the dead, fight like hell for the living.”

My heart and prayers go out to Rich and his family. May he Rest In Peace.

Brother Ed “Tuna” Cotugno needs our help

Local #52, Property Department Brother, Edward Cotugno, known by most as Tuna, needs our help and support to get through a major family crisis.
