Founded in 1893, and after 87 years operating under the University of Georgia, the State Board of Regents approved an independent status for the organization in 1980. The Red & Black circulates the largest college newspaper in Georgia. Each week we distribute 10,000 copies of the paper both on and off campus reaching nearly 45,000 students, faculty and staff with coverage of University and local n
ews, sports, variety, opinions, puzzles, classifieds, and advertising for local and national products and services. We also publish daily online content and a quarterly magazine, Ampersand, which caters to the areas of food, fashion, music, art & leisure. The Red and Black is operationally and financially independent from the University of Georgia. The organization receives no student activity fees or other funding from UGA. Our two-fold mission is to provide a training ground for students interested in gaining experience in various aspects of media publishing and to provide a high quality news source for the University of Georgia community. As a 501 (C) (3) not-for-profit corporation, The Red and Black is governed by a volunteer board of directors. The board of directors appoints the General Manager, Editor in Chief, and Student Ad Manager to carry out the day-to-day duties of publishing the newspaper and digital products. A staff box of current employees runs daily on the Opinions page (usually page 4).
