[5/26/2026] A Flood Watch is now in effect for almost all of North Georgia, the western half of Middle Georgia and portions of Southwest Georgia through this evening. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

We have a chance of rain everyday across the state through the end of the month! The GFS model is showing a few areas that could see up to 6 inches of rain between now and Sunday, May 31st. This will not fall all at once, thankfully. But this will start to make up for our rainfall deficits. The Euro model is not as bullish, but it still shows most of Georgia receiving around 2 inches of rain between now and May 31st.

We have a few small improvements with this week's drought monitor. The Level 4 (Exceptional Drought) area in Northeast Georgia has rolled back to Level 3 (Extreme Drought). A small portion of the Level 4 area in Southwest Georgia has also eased back to a Level 3. We also an improvement for a small area in southern Richmond/northern Burke County, where we are back to Level 1 (Moderate Drought) stage, this spot makes up less than 1% of the state, but we'll take any improvement we can get. Keep in mind, the time period for this map ended Tuesday morning, so the rain from the rest of the day on Tuesday into Wednesday for South Georgia will not show up until next week's map.

This week's drought map remains exactly the same as last week's. Still 1/3 of the state is in the highest level, Level 4 Exceptional Drought stage. The data is valid through Tuesday morning, so the rain from the past 24 hours will not show up until next week.

[4/25/2026, 2:15 pm UPDATE]
We have traded in the high pressure for low pressure over Georgia. That means clouds and the development of showers. There are several showers over Southwest Georgia right now and we are expecting those showers to continue to move toward and develop over Southeast Georgia over the next several hours. Low pressure also mean rising air. That has helped "vent" out a lot of smoke into the upper atmosphere. There are still areas of dense smoke around the wild fires and haze into North Georgia.

The Brantley County (Hwy 82) fire has now burned close to 10,000 acres. The fire is still only 10% contained. Mandatory evacuations remain in effect, now including HWY 110W from HWY 82 to HWY 32, all the way to POST RD from HWY 82 to HWY 32.

The Echols County (The Pineland Road) fire is currently estimated to have burned around 32,000 acres and is also only 10% contained.

FRIDAY EVENING WILDFIRE UPDATE
The Brantley (Hwy 82_ fire is currently estimated at 5,531 acres and is 15% contained. Fire activity for the Brantley Hwy 82 fire is expected to remain active. The Echols County (Pineland Road) fire is currently estimated at 32,183 acres and is 10% contained. Fire activity for the Pineland Road fire is expected to remain active. Severe drought conditions combined with low afternoon humidity will allow for active fire potential into this weekend.

Scattered showers are expected to pop up over the affected area after 3 pm on Saturday, with the rain chances increases toward the evening hours. Only isolated showers are expected on Sunday. Another round of rain is expected to move in on Tuesday into Wednesday of next week.

FRIDAY MORNING UPDATE ON THE BRANTLEY COUNTY (HWY 82) WILDFIRE:
Currently there are 59 fire departments from across the state working specifically on structure protection efforts as well as 20 dozers and 8 type 6 engines. Air resources include small and large helicopters and large air tankers.

Due to dense smoke this AM, Hwy 82 is closed. As conditions improve the road may reopen. Please follow all law enforcement guidance and road barricades, these are in place for your safety.

After good relative humidity recovery across the area last night, winds today will be out of the SW at 5-7 mph and humidities will drop below 30% through the day. These conditions will create conditions for increased fire activity during the heat of the day.

Evacuations are still in place and we anticipate that conditions may warrant additional evacuations. Curfew beginning tonight 8:30 PM - 6:30 am in the affected area.
