David Steindl-Rast: Want to be happy? Be grateful

The Thanksgiving spirit fades during the Black Friday bloodbath, and the happiness associated with new toys follows. But filmmakers can preserve the joy of work. Remembering fellow cast and crew as holidays hit set keeps creators calm and content as shopping days tick away.

Maya Angelou - Rainbow In The Clouds

Film's a people business. While moving from set to set, bonds form, break, and rebuild with each new crew member. Projects can't exist in a vacuum, and neither can their creators. Every human adds to a movie whether calling shots or calling catering, and when wrap's called, sometimes the only thing people leaves indies with are complimentary DVDs and enough residual energy to survive the dark days between gigs. This positivity doesn't come from the lights of opening weekend. It comes from the rays of hope other filmmakers exude during shared hours running, falling, and bleeding between takes. Be a rainbow and help others through the freelance storm.

One thing separates a good video from a waste of time. Fun. As deadlines, budgets, and peer feedback weight on new creators, forgetting why one starts is common, and projects become burdens instead of outlets from reality. New media thrives on frivolity, but even drama needs a breather for viewers. In each project take a moment of whimsy. Do a project of whimsy. Play hard. Play often. And audiences will hit play over and over.

Can one make death funny? Alan Ball earned an Emmy for it on his journey from bloodthirsty bridesmaids to well-behaved vampires. The writer knows both sides of success after American Beauty and his sitcom were voted best and worst in the same year. In an Ideas At The House interview, the Six Feet Under creator shares his experiences abandoning “moments of sh*t” for moment of truth. Though steady pay is great, Ball emphasizes writing for oneself and letting shows become what they want. Stepping out of a story’s way keeps his projects consistent, and indie artists can learn from the man who turned death into a weekly highlight.

Why Oprah Had Trouble Writing Her Harvard Commencement Speech - Super Soul Sunday - OWN

The harder to get, the better to have. Steven Pressfield elaborates on this principle during Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday. He believes resistance is a dream’s second wave, and creators confront it when pursuing a project of value. The negative force rears its face the minute a filmmaker seeks a higher level. As The War of Art writer suggests, conflict is a natural part of the process, and if an indie company puts its butt where its heart is, it can spend more energy working than worrying.

About Time - International Trailer

The average movie-goer doesn’t want a rom-com slash family drama with a hint of sci-fi. Richard Curtis’s About Time shows the world’s need for such a blend. The feature starts with a young man using time travel for personal gain and grows into a metaphor on paternal relationships. As reliving the past destroys the present, both Tim and viewers choose between living with longing or not living at all. Curtis’s everyday humor and three-dimensional characters makes the semi-autobiographic story universal. Catch this cinematic gem before the moment passes.

Wes Craven on being a filmmaker

It's not Halloween without Wes Craven. The master storyteller twists dreams into nightmares, parents into monsters, and satires into record-breaking franchises. The writer/director/producer carries his academia experience into each project ensuring scares are rooted in psychological and emotional truth. Some deem his target audience uncivilized, but Craven believes playing to the height of any viewer's intelligence quintessential for long term success. His boundary breaking record speaks for itself, so any business man or woman can learn a few tricks regardless of genre. It takes a lot of work to make killing look effortless.

Writers: Writing Your Web Series - 2012 IAWTV Awards Panel

The oldest and most abundant resource in movie making is the human body, but it's also the most neglected. With social media bringing creators a click apart, writers groups are forming at a rapid pace. Weekly meetings where professionals help others develop and network ideas are as cheap as pizza. Content can't exist in a vacuum, and four fresh eyes are better than two tired ones. As indie artists wear multiple hats, producer, director, and even actor groups are forming for freelancers who need a space for important brainstorming and life-saving venting. No project is an island. Make a group. Find a group.

Spinning Plates Official Trailer 1 (2012) - Documentary HD

Audiences crave truth in 2013, but documentaries are scarce. Joseph Levy feeds their hunger with Spinning Plates, winner of the Audience Award in Austin, Santa Barbara, and Naples. The film juxtaposes the legacy of Chicago's Alinea, Iowa's Breitbach's, and Tucson's La Concina de Gabby. While customers eat warm meals, the camera examples each kitchen's cold secrets. Workers fight everything from foreclosure to cancer in the hour and a half filled with plenty of laughs, tears, and garnish. As the recession rages, the movie rejuvenates viewers' belief in the American Dream. Levy offers a hearty helping of hope in his must-see documentary.

'Kill Your Darlings' DP Reed Morano On Why Cinematography is So Male-Centric | Tribeca

Anything boys can do, girls can do better. In 2013, filmmaking is still a male dominated field, but women continue breaking boundaries. Thanks to films like Bridesmaids, producers know audiences want female driven comedy, and thank to films like Bachelorette, directors know viewers are sick of well-behaved female leads. Public responses to these revolutionary films came as no surprise to box office watchers who know women attend more movies than men, but the view from the set to screening room is drastically different. Females in technical roles seem an endangered species, but Reed Morano assures viewers they exist. In an age where actresses demand stronger roles while more women begin producing, the field is shifting. A future where sets become gender balanced or indies become packed with estrogen behinds the scenes isn't to far away if females keep mentoring each other and making unmissable art.

In this exclusive clip from Morano's extensive Craft Truck interview, she talks about why cinematography has been a boy's club.
