WASTING PRAYERS ON DEMONS — Lyrics by Jessica Holter
She said she would do anything to get a man,
Sacrifice her body, give all that she had.
For a man —
Down on her knees.
For a man —
Praying for him.
For a man —
Not a word to God, for herself.
Amen, she said…
She said she wants to be with him,
But any man would do.
First come, first served —
That old adage still rings true.
All love ain’t good love,
But any love is fine.
She said she needs strong arms around her,
Even if it’s all a lie.
She said she would do anything to get a man,
Sacrifice her body, give all that she had.
For a man…
For a man… She had her reasons…
Her mother cried:
Baby girl, you wasting prayers on demons!
She said she needs a man who loves her so…
It spills through his fists uncontrolled.
She loves being vulnerable and surprised —
It’s really not that bad, she says, sometimes.
She says it’s just a bruise — and bruises, they do fade.
That it’s only pain — and pain, it goes away.
What is more, it makes the making up
So good the next day…
She said she would do anything to get a man,
Sacrifice her body, give all that she had.
For a man…
For a man… She had her reasons…
Her mother cried:
Baby girl, you wasting prayers on demons!
She says he didn’t mean it…
Wasn’t trying to hurt her.
He cried when it was over,
He needs her to feel his pain,
To know his shame.
It’s just the fear of losing her
That’s driving him insane —
Repeating a narrative her character can’t escape.
For a while she believes him,
Knowing he’s lying in her face.
Obedient and silent
Just to keep the peace —
But her consciousness is screaming
From somewhere deep within,
And the woman she’s been hiding
Starts stepping into place.
In the flame of the gaslight,
Self‑doubt ignites —
He says she’s crazy,
Says it’d be amazing
If she’d go somewhere and die.
He hurt and held her,
Mending what he had broken,
Expecting a hero’s welcome
Back into her heart again.
She said she would do anything to get a man…
But that was yesterday — old things must pass away.
All love ain’t good love.
The truth came slowly.
Mindful, fasting, focused,
Taking self‑inventory —
She said—
I reclaim all of my power —
Every part of me I ever set aside.
I stand in my own spirit now,
Unshaken, aligned, and fortified.
She had her reasons…
Her mother cried:
Amen, Amen!
A‑ay‑man…
Aaa‑men…
Amen…
No more wasting prayers on demons.
