Michael Richards aka Kramer (Seinfeld) was very disappointed when he realized that his mother wouldn’t be a recurring character on Seinfeld. Just like Jerry’s and George’s parents became beloved fixtures on the show, Richards hoped that Babs Kramer—played by the legendary Sheree North—would also return in future episodes.
Richards even went to Larry David with the request. But Larry explained that introducing more of Kramer’s family would take away from the mystery that made the character so unique. Part of Kramer’s charm was that you never fully understood where he came from or how he lived, and Larry wanted to preserve that mystique.
Still, Richards cherished the chance he did have to work with Sheree North. He often spoke about how talented she was, and how much he enjoyed sharing scenes with her. North herself was a Hollywood veteran, often described in her prime as “20th Century Fox’s answer to Marilyn Monroe.” With decades of film and television credits to her name, she brought a special presence to the role of Babs.

Bryan Cranston once revealed that one of his funniest moments on Seinfeld actually came from a crew member’s suggestion.
In the episode where Jerry suspects that his dentist, Dr. Tim Whatley (played by Cranston), and his assistant are taking advantage of patients under nitrous oxide, the original script had nothing unusual about the scene. It was meant to be played straight.
During rehearsal, however, Cranston was hanging around the set when a lighting guy on a ladder casually told him, “Before you give Jerry that mask, why don’t you take a hit yourself?” Cranston thought it was a brilliant idea.
The next day, during filming, he lifted the mask to his own face, inhaled deeply, and immediately started to giggle. Jerry Seinfeld broke down laughing so hard he fell out of the dentist’s chair. Larry David, less expressive but just as sharp, simply said, “Yes, yes, yes—that’s funny. Keep it.”
It took hours to get through the scene because Jerry couldn’t stop cracking up every time Cranston pulled the gag. And when people later asked him how he came up with it, Cranston pointed to the crew member in the back, who just shrugged as if it were nothing.

When NBC executives first read the script for “The Chinese Restaurant,” they were baffled. For 22 minutes, Jerry, Elaine, and George stood in the lobby of a restaurant, waiting for a table that never came. No scene changes, no progress, no Kramer. To network brass, it didn’t look like television—it looked like nothing. Jeremiah Bosgang and Rick Ludwin, who had been fighting for the show’s survival, suddenly found themselves staring at what they feared was proof of their colleagues’ doubts: Seinfeld was “too small” to sustain as a sitcom.
Larry David, of course, saw it differently. To him, the script was a bold experiment, television’s version of Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. Ludwin, sensing its brilliance but knowing the risks, let David vent his frustrations on a walk around the lot. “If this is Seinfeld, then let’s air it,” he finally said. Against their better instincts, NBC executives allowed the episode to go forward.
Even actor James Hong, who played the maütre d’, was perplexed. But David insisted the strangeness was the point—life’s frustrations in real time. When the episode aired on May 23, 1991, critics hailed it as groundbreaking. The Seattle Times declared, “Seinfeld doesn’t feel like sitcom television,” and New York magazine compared it to talking with your funniest friends. Suddenly, what NBC thought was flimsy became a creative turning point.

That's True! Before Seinfeld ever hit the air, Jerry Seinfeld had a strong feeling that former Fridays castmate Michael Richards was born to play the eccentric neighbor in his new sitcom. Richards had already built a reputation in guest roles on Cheers, Miami Vice and Night Court, stealing scenes with nothing more than manic body language and wild hair. He was known for going to extremes—on Fridays he once demanded “a thousand pounds of dirt” on the set just so he could improvise an unforgettable seven-minute war scene with plastic army toys and real fire.
Larry David was skeptical at first, worrying Richards was too big and bizarre for the grounded neighbor he had in mind. But Seinfeld trusted his instincts
and Richards trusted his own. When audition day came, he barely acknowledged the other actors (including Tony Shalhoub!) and paced the hotel lobby muttering his lines under his breath.
Then he burst into the room like a human fireball. Jerry read opposite him and the chemistry was instant. Richards unleashed so much physical energy that the audition ended with him literally standing on his head. Network exec Brandon Tartikoff walked out saying, “Well, if you want funny
” And just like that, Kramer was born.
