““You are the sunshine of my life ”
Late Eulogy ••
It’s what she sang to me with so much soul. The only woman whose love I really felt when she said it. But with the story of my Grandmother’s love, also comes with the story of grief that plagued her childlike heart, mixing a spiritual light with a hard shot of her pain. She had 3 children, and 7 grand children, once married into the Haitian linage that birthed the last name William.
Our story is by far from perfect, but with the sense in me to always remember the depth of care to my bloodline for me, is how I know love exist, because it came from the ‘I love you” that came with a tone of enthusiasm, and shown in her quirky death of a personality, that had her children, including myself who loved her the most, strike from a deep place of knowing who she could be, even with her own reckless mindset. She divided the family in ways that at the end of it, I could only blame it on her ailments to her spiritual life that brought more breakage to her household than what was built. My grandmother had her own dreams swept from her growing up, meeting a love in her life that almost killed her, and meeting an end with an intense shift in her life line, that needed crucial nourishment of new growth with purity in the intent of her soul line.
I loved my Grandmother dearly, one of the voices in my family that has held me dear to her heart since I was given to her as one of my caretakers. To not have been there on her last days, is a hole in the wall of my heart. I could not see how to repair it down my road these past few years, but every internal spiral, my heart always feel the love to my life that was a small fracture to a mother’s love. I will miss the beautiful hugs, bright false teethed smile, the wig and outfit choices that caused a great War of roasts at the gathering.
••
I filther the love from your darkness to be the first woman I forgive, and never will forget, for the sake of fertilizing new roots after the death of your Garden that never had a chance.
To my favorite dancing queen, my grand mother,
