I spent the week out at KCTJ—West Georgia Regional Airport—with the fine folks from my home chapter, EAA Chapter 976, helping out with their summer camp. It’s the kind of place where the hum of a Continental engine turns heads, and where kids still look up when something flies by.

It’s no secret I love aviation. Always have. I still think it’s one of America’s greatest contributions to the world—right up there with rock-n-roll. Airplanes are still cool, and the folks who keep them flying are some of the absolute best.

As an airshow announcer, I’m used to connecting with crowds—thousands over a weekend, and sometimes millions at shows like the Pacific Airshow. But this week, it was just a handful of campers, all wide-eyed and curious, each carrying that same spark that first drew me to the sky.

There’s something special about watching young people discover flight—not just the physics of it, but the magic. The wonder. That moment when they sit in a cockpit, or watch a prop spin up, and something inside clicks. You can see it in their eyes—they get it.

So to my friends at Chapter 976 and the next generation of aviators: thanks for letting me be a small part of your journey. Keep chasing that horizon. ~Matt

Had a great time touring the American Airpower Museum ahead of the Jones Beach - fourleafairshow. Great to catch up with B-29 Doc crew and pilot RT Dickson. Catch Doc this weekend over the beach, plus the P-40 and P-51! Heck…you can even go for a ride!

Had a wonderful time eating, and praying my way across Paris. Travel is education, and I love it in small doses, but I’m looking forward to being back home —and with you on Warbird Radio this week!

The History Worth Saving Podcast

HISTORY WORTH SAVING - Here’s the story...the whole story. In 2009 I left television news and started an internet radio station devoted to telling the stories of our Airmen past and present. For the next ten years WarbirdRadio.com told amazing stories of the men and women who truly helped save the world. In 2015 and 2016, Warbird Radio was awarded the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association and had well over 1 million listens from fans around the world. In May of 2020, two months into the COVID19 pandemic crisis, WarbirdRadio.com experienced a catastrophic data loss that was beyond our control and sadly beyond any practical repair. For me, the loss was a “hand of God” moment - a strong push to begin the next chapter.

The previous two years I’d been living in the Middle East, quietly uploading shows across two VPN’s while trying to work around a strict authoritarian government. My time over there made me love my American home even more. One night while reading through the days news, I discovered a story about a study from the Pew Research Center (linked here). The data showed how the vast majority of Americans don’t know their neighbors. This really stuck with me.

Today our country is deeply divided. You can’t turn on the news without hearing something about “tribal politics” or “partisan efforts”. The real truth of the matter is - you can’t understand someone you don’t know. If we don’t know the folks who live closest to us, we’ll never be able to repair a national divide.

As a journalist, I wanted to do my small part to correct this problem. I launched HistoryWorthSaving.com to tell simple stories about the people, places and things around me. During 2019 I rolled out seven feature stories, then the day after Election Day, I launched the History Worth Saving Podcast. When WarbirdRadio.com disappeared on that cool spring May night, I decided it must be time to merge the brands. The stories told on WarbirdRadio.com were about men and women who rose to the challenge. They did whatever they had to do to save their way of life - the beloved country.
