I wasn’t expecting anyone that evening, so when I opened the door and saw two police officers, my stomach dropped.
“This can’t be right,” I managed to say, but one of them simply shook his head.
“Ma’am, your daughter contacted us,” he said.
The knock at the door made my heart stop. Two police officers stood on my porch, uniforms crisp against the fading sky.
Emma, twelve, appeared in the hallway, clutching her stuffed rabbit, tears streaming. “Mom… I have to tell you something,” she whispered.
My pulse raced. The officers exchanged glances. “Mrs. Collins,” one said gently, “your daughter reported seeing something concerning about your husband, Daniel.”
My world tilted. “What… what did she see?” I asked, my voice barely steady.
Emma’s voice broke. “In the garage… last night… I saw blood on his hands.”
The room fell silent. I held her trembling hand, unsure how our lives had changed in an instant.
