For the first time in history, a GSU publication, Underground Journal, has won a Pacemaker Award in the Magazine category. This would not have been possible without our fearless former Editor-in-Chief, Cayce Tiedemann, our amazing Production Editor Rebecca Bates, and all of our wonderful members who dedicated their time and energy into making each issue of Underground Journal a reality.

Most importantly, this would not have been possible without YOUR submissions and support. We are so grateful for everything you do for us and send to us, and we will continue in our efforts in making Underground Journal a true safe haven for all the creators of Georgia State University!

We here at Underground hope all of our extended family out there has been managing to adapt and find a new sense of normalcy in this topsy-turvy world. We're all very excited to announce that submissions for issue 11.1 of Underground are open as of today! To learn more about how to submit your work, check the link in our bio. Our suggestive theme for this semester's issue is SAFE HAVEN. For us at the journal, Underground has been a safe haven where we can connect, work together, and bond over shared passions. What does your safe haven look like? Is it a place? A person? A memory? This semester, we want to know what makes everyone in our community feel safe. We hope you'll share this safe haven with us.

Congratulations to today’s featured poet, Noah Britton! We accepted one of his poems for our Spring 2020 issue, TAKE ROOT, and today, we’d like to share his work, “TAURUS.”

This poem invokes powerful imagery through the speaker’s sight and conveys a thoughtful question about appearances and what it means to be “organically magnetic.” Written in a sincere tone and an undulating voice, readers can follow the journey of the narrator’s eyes from inside their being to the external world as they explore the concept of beauty.

Thank you for submitting to Underground – and write on!

Congratulations to today’s featured poet, Skylar Little! As you know, we accepted two of her wonderful poems for our Spring 2020 issue, TAKE ROOT. Today, we’d like to share the second poem we accepted, “The Fatal American Need to Have a Good Time.”

Just like “Peter Popoff,” this poem contains palpable imagery that almost materializes on the pages, pulling readers into the setting of the poem and letting them see through the eyes of the narrator. From the “criss-crossed metal” to the humid atmosphere, it’s almost possible to feel exactly what the speaker is experiencing. The tone of the poem along with the artful way the atmosphere in the work are conveyed are all part of Skylar’s unique penmanship, making this wonderful piece a must-have for

For those of you that didn't get to see issue 10.2 at our release party last semester, we plan on slowly releasing some of the spreads from Take Root here on our instagram over the coming weeks! To get that started, we wanted to spotlight the cover art done for issues 10.1 and 10.2 by our incredible team member @strwbrryblade ! Underground wouldn't be the beautiful journal you all know and love without the contributions of our incredible volunteer team who pour their hearts into each issue 💞 Here's what Rose has to say about her complimentary covers and her time with Underground over the past year:

I think of myself as an amateur artist, especially with the digital medium, but getting my work on the cover of both journals gave me a sense of artistic validity. The In Transit cover was just a photo I took on the Marta train that somehow transformed into a work of art after some experimentation on 3D Paint. Making the Take Root cover was far more intentional. I wanted to give In Transit a pair while also accurately depicting the theme of home and beginnings.

Looking at the covers now, I feel honored to have my work as an introduction to the magic within the pages of these journals. I still connect with both covers as they both encapsulate feelings I continue to experience today. When I joined the Underground Journal, I was transitioning into college life in an unfamiliar city, but I found a place to feel safe and at home. The amount of gratitude I have toward the underground team is overwhelming because it is with their hospitality that I found comfort and confidence in my art. @ Atlanta, Georgia

💥 GSU ARTIST FEATURE 💥
Ebone is a sophomore from Decatur pursuing a degree in Fine Arts. She takes inspiration from vaporwave and VHS aesthetics and expresses her creativity through fourth wall breaks. Although her style is still evolving, she enjoys meshing technology and human life, interpreting each piece as a segment from a simulation. Ebone is most excited about taking graphic design classes during her time at GSU. 💥 #artistssupportingartists #featuredartist #undergrads #undergroundjournal #gsucreates #gsu #georgiastateuniversity #creativecollective #downtownatlanta

*first 👀 at our new staff*
Issue 10.1 Theme Announcement!!!
Many people aren’t aware our journal was named after our campus’s adjacent Underground Atlanta. This mixed-use shopping and entertainment district is home to post-Civil War Reconstruction Era buildings and cobblestone streets. Once a thriving staple of downtown, Underground Atlanta has been repeatedly abandoned since its heyday in the 1970s. If you’re a student or alumni of GSU downtown, chances are you’ve wandered around the subterranean ghost town that is Underground. And more than likely, you’ve experienced some form of nostalgia— even if indirectly.

Located across from Five Points MARTA Station hub, Underground Atlanta and its continued journey reflect Underground Journal’s decision to name our Fall 2019 issue “In Transit.” Although this is only a suggested theme, we encourage GSU undergrads to be as liberal as they desire in exploring its interpretation. We can’t wait to see what you create for us. Submission link in bio!
