Congratulations to today’s featured poet, Skylar Little! As you know, we accepted two of her wonderful poems for our Spring 2020 issue, TAKE ROOT. Today, we’d like to share the second poem we accepted, “The Fatal American Need to Have a Good Time.”

Just like “Peter Popoff,” this poem contains palpable imagery that almost materializes on the pages, pulling readers into the setting of the poem and letting them see through the eyes of the narrator. From the “criss-crossed metal” to the humid atmosphere, it’s almost possible to feel exactly what the speaker is experiencing. The tone of the poem along with the artful way the atmosphere in the work are conveyed are all part of Skylar’s unique penmanship, making this wonderful piece a must-have for

Thank you for submitting to Underground – and write on!

If you like this piece, be sure to check out this poet at @notskylarlittle !

For those of you that didn't get to see issue 10.2 at our release party last semester, we plan on slowly releasing some of the spreads from Take Root here on our instagram over the coming weeks! To get that started, we wanted to spotlight the cover art done for issues 10.1 and 10.2 by our incredible team member @strwbrryblade ! Underground wouldn't be the beautiful journal you all know and love without the contributions of our incredible volunteer team who pour their hearts into each issue 💞 Here's what Rose has to say about her complimentary covers and her time with Underground over the past year:

I think of myself as an amateur artist, especially with the digital medium, but getting my work on the cover of both journals gave me a sense of artistic validity. The In Transit cover was just a photo I took on the Marta train that somehow transformed into a work of art after some experimentation on 3D Paint. Making the Take Root cover was far more intentional. I wanted to give In Transit a pair while also accurately depicting the theme of home and beginnings.

Looking at the covers now, I feel honored to have my work as an introduction to the magic within the pages of these journals. I still connect with both covers as they both encapsulate feelings I continue to experience today. When I joined the Underground Journal, I was transitioning into college life in an unfamiliar city, but I found a place to feel safe and at home. The amount of gratitude I have toward the underground team is overwhelming because it is with their hospitality that I found comfort and confidence in my art. @ Atlanta, Georgia

💥 GSU ARTIST FEATURE 💥
Ebone is a sophomore from Decatur pursuing a degree in Fine Arts. She takes inspiration from vaporwave and VHS aesthetics and expresses her creativity through fourth wall breaks. Although her style is still evolving, she enjoys meshing technology and human life, interpreting each piece as a segment from a simulation. Ebone is most excited about taking graphic design classes during her time at GSU. 💥 #artistssupportingartists #featuredartist #undergrads #undergroundjournal #gsucreates #gsu #georgiastateuniversity #creativecollective #downtownatlanta

Her current work explores her broad range of experiences from growing up in the Midwest to currently living in the South— touching on culture, afrofuturism, social transition and, self-identity. Alexis has been published in previous issues of our journal and is an anticipated BFA Photography graduate this Spring at GSU. I’m continuously amazed at how our team pulls together to get a job done. We’re navigating this remote-journal-production process just as we are everything else in our lives right now: one day at a time. We invite any of you who haven’t held a copy of IN TRANSIT yet to visit our website where you can view our latest issue in its entirety (link in bio.) In 1925, Kell Hall was the first multistory garage to be built in Atlanta. It became GSU’s first permanent building after being converted to classrooms in 1946. While we wait for indefinite construction to wrap and the new greenspace to appear, swipe for photos our Art Editor @harrisonwaynegallo took of Kell Hall in transit. *first 👀 at our new staff*
Issue 10.1 Theme Announcement!!!
Many people aren’t aware our journal was named after our campus’s adjacent Underground Atlanta. This mixed-use shopping and entertainment district is home to post-Civil War Reconstruction Era buildings and cobblestone streets. Once a thriving staple of downtown, Underground Atlanta has been repeatedly abandoned since its heyday in the 1970s. If you’re a student or alumni of GSU downtown, chances are you’ve wandered around the subterranean ghost town that is Underground. And more than likely, you’ve experienced some form of nostalgia— even if indirectly.

Located across from Five Points MARTA Station hub, Underground Atlanta and its continued journey reflect Underground Journal’s decision to name our Fall 2019 issue “In Transit.” Although this is only a suggested theme, we encourage GSU undergrads to be as liberal as they desire in exploring its interpretation. We can’t wait to see what you create for us. Submission link in bio!

For our tenth anniversary, Underground is delighted to announce Issue 10.1 will exclusively feature GSU students!💡We’re going to get playful this year, and we’re encouraging you to do the same. We want your photography, digital design, micropoems, slant rhymes, mixed media, collages, short stories, comics, jr. high diary entries, watercolors, observational illustrations, and that category you just invented. Still reveling in the buzz of inspiration that was the Mega College Media Workshop in Minneapolis last week. The opening keynote speaker discussed trauma and the importance of mental health in the field of Journalism. The following morning began with a panel on diversity and inclusion. The Literary Magazine track led by the wonderful Jim Cihlar of University of Minnesota exceeded our expectations. Prose editor, Victoria, and I are beyond grateful to Georgia State's Student Media department for the opportunity to stretch our legs and minds in new lands. We've already begun exploring the connections we made on this trip and preparing Underground Journal for a new kind of creative exposure. ⚡️

You betcha!

WELCOME! Cayce Tiedemann, here— your Editor in Chief for the upcoming 2019-2020 year. Underground Journal is GSU’s only art and literary journal featuring our students, by our students. We publish art, prose, and poetry from undergrads twice a year via our Fall and Spring issues. Our website, social media, and entire organization will be undergoing some major updates in the coming weeks. If you'd like your writing to be featured virtually in between calls for submissions, please reach out at [email protected].

A little about me...
I was previously Poetry Editor of Underground and before that— featured twice with poems I wrote after taking a loooong hiatus from creative writing. I'm proof that it's never too late to start (or return to) your creative endeavors. I'm eager and grateful for the opportunity to connect with all of you. Please stay tuned for details on our monthly Creative Writing Workshops held on campus and Open Mic Nights at Condesa Coffee on Auburn Ave.

With castanets and cowbells,
Cayce
