RYJO allows metro-Atlanta’s best young musicians between the ages of 13 and 18 to experience jazz in an immersive, educational environment. The Rialto Youth Jazz Orchestra was formed in June 2011.
RYJO consists of two Big Bands (Intermediate & Advanced) and five jazz combos, RYJO exposes students to the full spectrum of jazz music and education. The students are selected through audition; participating high school students come from the following counties: Fulton, Cobb, Dekalb, Gwinnett, Clayton, and Fayette. The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school students who will be rising juniors and seniors during the program. The program offers instruction that is significantly different from the typical high school classroom and that is designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders. The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs installed 23 photographs in storefront windows of businesses located in Atlanta’s south downtown district in honor of the Atlanta Jazz Festival’s 40th anniversary. The photos are works from five photographers, four of whom hail from Atlanta.
“The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs is excited to display photographs of musicians that have entertained Atlantans at the Atlanta Jazz Festival over the past 39 years,” said Camille Russell Love, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. One of the musicians on display is our very own Dr. Gordon Vernick. The photograph is located on 92 Peachtree St.
