Just released: Body As a Negative by Izabela Jurcewicz

In this work Izabela Jurcewicz deals with traumatic memories written in the body on a cellular level. She was an inter-organ tumor patient, one of 300 cases worldwide, where science had few answers to the cause and how to proceed.

This experience of a patient being ‘on view’, researched and scanned, coined her relationship with the camera and ways of seeing a human. These medical experiences, especially surgeries, live as a photographic negative in her body and life, which henceforth produce images, including the ones that form this book. In the act of return, Izabela replaces the invasive surgical instrument with her camera as a receptive device to register, merge and enable a ritual of healing.

To synchronize the level of knowledge in her body and mind, she reperforms the trauma under her conditions and rewrites her memories, aiming to change them at a cellular level. At the same time this work gives her perspective to see and support her father, who at that time is going through intensive cancer treatment. The project highlights the process of emphatic engagement that brings dimensionality to the body and self again and grows a capacity to join with the suffering of others.

​Alec Soth (b. 1969) is a photographer born and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has published over twenty-five books including Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), NIAGARA (2006), Broken Manual (2010), Songbook (2015), I Know How Furiously Your Heart is Beating (2019), and A Pound of Pictures (2022). Soth has had over fifty solo exhibitions including survey shows organized by Jeu de Paume in Paris (2008), the Walker Art Center in Minnesota (2010) and Media Space in London (2015). Soth has been the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship (2013). In 2008, Soth created Little Brown Mushroom, a multi-media enterprise focused on visual storytelling. Soth is represented by Sean Kelly in New York, Weinstein Hammons Gallery in Minneapolis, Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco, Loock Galerie in Berlin, and is a member of Magnum Photos.

It’s finally here, and it’s beautiful. If You Go, All the Plants Will Die by Fred Mitchell explores failed relationships through dead plants. This one sentence explanation was basically all I needed to agree to publish this project.
​
​But it’s even cooler. . . It’s printed on thin, opaque paper, which allows the black and white plant imagery, color blocks, and the witty, irreverent and heartbreaking poetry of Derrick C. Brown to mesh together, creating an immersion that hits somewhere between high art and a country song.

Looking through Extinction Party by Jonathan Blaustein for the hundredth time today. Amazing that he spent 10 years making work for a book that would come out at exactly the right moment. Anyway, I’ve been spending more time with it today. You should too.
