Solomon Dryden didn’t come to be seen. He came to see. He parked his late wife’s Dodge Charger under the Texas sun, Marine uniform crisp, boots polished. Inside the gym, smelling of popcorn and floor wax, Solomon moved calmly through the chaos, taking a seat in the third row. He searched for Tyran—tall, lanky, with his mother’s eyes. As “Pomp and Circumstance” began, Solomon stood, shoulders squared, pride and ache in every inch of him. That’s when he noticed them: two security guards heading his way, one short and thick-set, the other chewing gum, eyes glazed.
