Jackson Reeling Red Devils qualify for state championship

Author: Jayla Perkins

Jackson, Ga - The Jackson Reeling Red Devils featuring anglers Rylan Valentine and Ali Raney, coached by Chris Popham and led by team captains Ryan Valentine and Wesley Raney, have finished a competitive season by qualifying for the state championship at Lake Seminole this June.

The sport of bass fishing consists of anglers catching spotted and largemouth bass, with the goal of bringing in five live fish by weigh-in time. Over the course of the season, the team has strengthened their understanding of nature while developing skills such as judgement, patience, and strategy.

Valentine and Raney delivered strong performances throughout the season, finishing 26th out of 121 boats at their fourth tournament in Lake Lanier and 22nd out of 114 boats at their fifth tournament on Lake Eufaula.

“Beyond the tournaments, it’s about the lessons they’re learning and the memories they’re making, which makes the whole experience special to witness,” said a parent.

Bass fishing continues to grow at the high school level. In 2020, the GHSA officially recognized bass fishing as a sport, and Jackson High School launched its program in 2022. The sport offers opportunities beyond high school, including collegiate teams and professional leagues.

Cross Town residents react to potential $1 million infrastructure investment

Author: Jayla Perkins

Jackson, Ga - Residents in the Cross Town community are expressing excitement as the City of Jackson moves forward with plans to apply for a $1 million Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to improve local infrastructure.

If awarded, the city would be required to provide a $250,000 match. The proposed project would focus on upgrading water and sewer in the area.

Many residents say the improvements are long overdue.

“I’m excited, they should have been invested already. My water hasn’t been right since they started the new way of reading meters,” said Antoin Taylor.

In 2024, the city transitioned to automated utility readers, a change that some residents say has led to ongoing concerns. Residents are also hopeful the project will address low water pressure, plumbing issues, and water quality, including requests for the system to be flushed.

The City of Jackson must apply for the grant by April 2027.

Jackson High School Art Club showcases student talent at 2026 Art Show

Author: Jayla Perkins

Jackson, Ga - Jackson High School’s Art Club hosted its 2026 Art Show, featuring student work in pottery, surrealism, and graphic design.

Program instructor Debbie Bell said the event gives students an opportunity to showcase their creativity, build confidence, and promote their work.

“I’ve had five students get accepted into college for art this year,” Bell said.

Senior Mariyah Griffin, who has been accepted to Columbus State University to major in art and psychology, hopes to become an art therapist or art teacher. She described art as a form of stress relief.

“It’s when you’re stressed out and want to express it, but you can’t,” Griffin said, describing one of her pieces.

Bell added that students are gaining valuable technical skills using programs such as Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, and emphasized her belief in their talent.

“Canva and A.I are not better than artists,” she said.

Years without AC: employees speak out about conditions at Macon Avenue Dollar General

Jackson, Ga - Customers and employees at the Dollar General located at 880 Macon Avenue finally found some relief from the extreme heat after recent rainfall.

For several years, the store’s air conditioning has reportedly been out, leading to high temperatures inside the building during warmer months.

“It’s been out for years, just come out here and fix it,” said one employee.

The store is currently relying on fans to provide limited air for customers and employees.

No parking in alleyway: City of Jackson rules against LS Wings employees parking in alleyway

Author: Jayla Perkins

Jackson, Ga - On April 21, the City of Jackson discussed whether the employees of LS Wings should be allowed to park in the alleyway between LS Wings and Rental Solutions.

Owners from both LS Wings and Rental Solutions appeared before the council as the issue was debated. During the discussion, Councilwomen Jeanette Riley and owners from LS Wings argued that the space in question is not an alley, but private property.

However, members of the fire and electric departments raised concerns about vehicles parking in the area, citing access and potential hazards.

“There is a grease pit over there. If a car catches fire right there, it could cause issues,” said Fire Chief Mike Wilson.

Councilwomen Riley questioned the designation of the space, asking:

“We keep calling it an alley. Is this an alley? Does this council believe this is an alley or the side of these people’s property?”

Mayor Carlos Duffey empathized the importance of safety, stating:

“ If we’ve got our fire team and our electric team all saying the same thing, that we shouldn’t park in these alleyways. I don’t know why we would advocate for it to change.”

When the floor was opened to the council the majority supported defining the area as an alleyway with no parking permitted. Councilman Lewis Sims was the only opposing voice, saying:

“This has been going on for 50 - 60 years. People have parked there. I would like to know what the truth is.”

Mayor Duffey responded:

“ Well, the truth is this is a fire safety issue.”

The discussion concluded with the city, reaffirming the ordinance and clearly defining the area as an alleyway where no parking is allowed .
