Atlanta adults view flu vaccine as safe and effective
Over 4 in 5 (83%) Atlanta adults surveyed agreed or strongly agreed that the flu vaccine is safe, and 81% agreed or strongly agreed that the flu vaccine is effective.
Why would Atlantans get the flu vaccine?
By a 2-to-1 margin, Atlanta adults were more likely to say that flu vaccination was a personal choice than a choice to protect the community. Survey respondents were asked which of two statements came closest to their beliefs: 69% chose “flu vaccination is a personal choice to protect my health” while 31% chose “flu vaccination is a community choice to protect others/society.”
Most Atlantans trust flu vaccine
In addition to the large majorities of Atlanta adults who agreed that the flu vaccine is safe and effective, 58% reported that they “completely” or “mostly” trust the flu vaccine, 26% of respondents said they “somewhat” trusted the vaccine, and 17% did not trust it at all.
Atlanta mirrors national results
Overall, the survey was also administered to 524 adults in St. Louis, Atlanta, North Carolina, and Mississippi. Across all sites, the responses were:
85% “strongly agree” or “agree” that the flu vaccine is safe;
83% “strongly agree” or “agree” that the flu vaccine is effective;
68% “completely” or “mostly” trust the flu vaccine;
69% chose “flu vaccination is a personal choice to protect my health;”
31% chose “flu vaccination is a community choice to protect others/society.”
Poll results differed by race
Across the four sites included in the survey, Black respondents were less likely than White respondents to “strongly agree” or “agree” that the flu vaccine is safe (80% vs. 90%), less likely to trust the flu vaccine (61% vs. 79%), and more likely to choose the statement “flu vaccination is a personal choice to protect my health” (75% vs. 64%). Studies show that these groups often differ in past and present experiences with vaccines and organizations that provide vaccines.
Preventing and responding to flu
Annual flu vaccines are recommended by the CDC for everyone six months and older. They are expected to be available in fall for the 2025-2026 flu season. Regular handwashing also helps prevent the spread of flu and other respiratory infections. Make a plan before flu season arrives on which vaccine to get, where to get it, and how to get a vaccine appointment.
