New murals debut in Marietta as part of M2R TrailFest

Marietta came alive with vibrant art and music during the annual M2R TrailFest, organized by the Marietta Arts Council. The Mountain to River trail served as the backdrop for this celebration of public art and community.

Under the warm sun, people explored the town, donning hats and sunglasses, as they admired the latest art installations. From live music on various stages to a pet parade, the event offered something for everyone.

Reflecting on the event's success, Bonnie Reavis expressed her satisfaction with the diverse activities and the engagement of the community. M2R TrailFest truly showcased the significance of the Marietta art scene.

Marietta gives developer 4 months to revise plan for downtown building

The Marietta City Council voted unanimously to give Bridger Properties four months to revise its proposal for a seven-story residential building downtown. The developer's application is still pending, and the council requested Bridger to hold town halls and gather input from residents before submitting new plans. The city's Historic Board of Review previously recommended denying Bridger's design. Mayor Steve Tumlin expressed the need for the project to comply with city code. Bridger, an Atlanta-based developer, does not require rezoning but needs the council's approval due to the property's location in the downtown historic district. The possibility of litigation remains, but both parties expressed a willingness to negotiate.

Two students from North Cobb High School were detained after the school was placed under "code yellow" due to threatening images being air-dropped among students for two consecutive days. However, investigations by multiple law enforcement agencies showed no actual threat existed. The school district stated that severe repercussions will be applied as per district policy, state and Federal law, for engaging in behavior that disrupts the school day. Prior to the air-dropping incidents, the district investigated two other rumors of danger to the school, which were found to be unfounded. The district has been investigating threats against schools, which have become a trend, and taking appropriate measures to keep students and staff safe.

Truist Park and The Battery Atlanta, funded by $300 million in public funds, generated more property tax revenue than the $12 million debt service paid by Cobb County in 2022. The Battery's land value increased from $5 million to $736 million in 2022, with $26.5 million in sales tax revenue. 80% of its 10 million visitors were from outside the county. The Henry, a $500 million development, with 3% ownership for the Braves, will start construction this year.

Orioles owner eyes The Battery Atlanta as a model for Baltimore ballpark

The Battery, a district surrounding the Atlanta Braves’ stadium, has become a popular destination for locals, attracting over 10 million visitors in 2022. The district offers a mix of entertainment options, such as shopping and dining, in addition to baseball games. This success has caught the attention of Orioles CEO John Angelos and Gov. Wes Moore, who are exploring the possibility of developing an entertainment district around Camden Yards, using $600 million in public funding earmarked for the stadium. However, the economic benefit of The Battery has been debated by economists, and traffic and parking remain issues for visitors.

May is national stroke awareness month.

Tips on identifying symptoms of a stroke. F.A.S.T. Strokes kill over 700,000 people per year. Getting quick medical attention is key. By learning the F.A.S.T. warning signs, you just might save a life from stroke. Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person's smile uneven? Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand?

Kennesaw State University will host eight graduation ceremonies from May 9-12 to honor nearly 4,000 spring graduates. The graduating class comprises 664 first-generation college graduates and 60 military veterans, ranging in age from 19 to 81, and will receive undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees. Georgia McGaughey, a KSU alumna and Vice President at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, will deliver a speech on May 9. Degrees will be conferred upon students from various colleges, including the College of Science and Mathematics, College of Computing and Software Engineering, and Bagwell College of Education.
