Norfolk State University broke ground Friday on a new $118 million science building.

The four-story, 131,000-square-foot building will include labs and classrooms, plus a planetarium and greenhouse.

The facility will be next to one of the university’s public gates along Corprew Avenue and is designed with community engagement in mind.

NSU’s biology, chemistry and physics departments will move into the building, as will the Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences.

In North Charleston, South Carolina, Principal Henry Darby of North Charleston High School took on overnight shifts at Walmart to support his students in need. Working from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. three nights a week, he donated his earnings to help students pay bills, buy food, and cover tuition costs. This selfless act drew national attention, leading to over $100,000 in donations from the community and a $50,000 contribution from Walmart.

Darby's dedication reflects his belief that "all work that is honest is honorable." His actions inspired others to support the cause, demonstrating the power of community and compassion.
