“How a group of Atlanta-based creatives and psychiatrists are taking a stand for black mental health”

: Other psychology publications aren’t nearly as focused on the black experience. Additionally, nothing I’ve seen has been so raw and visual. Why was it important to have a magazine that people actually wanted to have at home on their coffee table?
sarahvinson : There is mental health in all things. This just isn’t consistently recognized. Our goal is to take everything on the continuum from black mental health to mental illness out of the box – both literally and figuratively: using a print to help people take mental health out of the mental boxes that keep it sectioned off and unspeakable. Our print can hold its own in any space, not just those reserved for medical or mental health stuff or for medical or mental health audiences.

As the creative director of Ourselves Black Magazine, I spend a lot of time traveling, pulling on the creative and aesthetic strings of many cultures and countries around the world to initiate the creative process.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Staring at a map of Russia in my early childhood sparked an obscure curiosity in wanting to visit Russia one day; I don't know why, but it stuck. My curiosity in Russia from a map visual, matured into a greater curiosity in Russian literature, everything from the greats like Gogol, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, and Pushkin, to some of the lesser knowns, and my favorite Vladimir Pozner. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
I digress to mention that Russia's greatest poet and the founder of modern Russian literature, a "white man" (many older Russians would like to believe) was also the great-grandson to a stolen East African, Eritrean slave-child adopted by Peter the great of St. Petersburg. General Ibrahim Hannibal (not to be confused with his namesake African military genius Hannibal The Great of 200 bc) became himself, one of the greatest military geniuses in Russian History. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Fast forward some years and boom, as an adult, I found myself literally walking the snow-covered streets of Moscow and St. Petersburg searching for coffee at 3am. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Needless to say, my curiosity with Russia, Russian Art, Russian Culture and Russian Literature puzzled many of my black friends, but to a greater degree, my father - A Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, Zora Neale Hurston while listening to Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" type of guy. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Langston Hughes also walked the streets of Russia when he was 32, and more interestingly, he did so in the 1930s with Graduates from my alma mater - Tuskegee University. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Therein lies an unforeseen, hidden gem that catapulted my inner Tuskegee Ego to investigate on a deeper level, Black Americans but more specifically, HBCU students and graduates and their love affair with USSR - Pre and post Stalin years. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
In short, please read this Amazing book By Black Russian, Yelena Khanga (I was honored to be able to speak with her and plan on meeting her in a next month in Moscow) which documents her family's Black Russian lineage back to the slave fields of Mississippi and into the classrooms of Tuskegee University who's students ended up developing Uzbekistan and Russia's Cotton and Agriculture Industry. ⁣⁣⁣⁣

I didn’t grow up seeing black entrepreneurs - never even had a black teacher until becoming a FAMU Rattler. For years, I’d received well-intentioned messaging that the respectable, responsible life path was education and then a steady job, often a “good government job”. When institutional racism on all sides has frayed or obliterated our economic safety net, perceived financial security is often the ultimate goal.

While understandable, this mentality limits true progress. I did the right things and followed the script: Go to school, get your degree(s). And then, when all of my training was finally over, I chose not to work full time for anyone else. I removed financial security as the ultimate goal and replaced it with one of financial freedom - freedom that allowed me to design a life that supported my wellness personally and to fund and support initiatives that mattered to me and my community professionally.

OurselvesBlack, until now, has been completely supported financially by me. Entrepreneurship empowered me with the capital and control over my time to do it. We exist because of this freedom, and also have a truly independent voice.
The next stage of building, rolling out our magazine and amplifying our message, needs the support of our community - whether it’s telling others about us, ordering a print, following us on social media, or becoming a sponsor or part of the provider directory.

An Overlooked Truth Of Black Mental Health: Thoughts Do Matter

The sum of one’s thoughts creates an internal mental environment that results in a certain emotional disposition which leads to particular decisions and actions. This is not ‘junk science’ or wives’ tales. Reputable researchers and scientists have produced work which reveals the truth of these realities. Dr. Caroline Leaf, a cognitive neuroscientist and who specializes in neuropsychology, has studied the science of thought for over 20 years. She explains that fear-based thoughts produce fear-based emotions which lead to fear-based actions. This cycle of mental and emotional toxicity causes harmful biochemicals to build in the mind and body, with devastating results.

A huge congratulations to the Morehouse graduates of 2019 for closing a chapter debt-free! Philanthropist and technology investors— Robert F. Smith
makes it his priority and pledged to give these graduates a clean slate.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, 75 percent of mental-health conditions begin by age 24, which means that both the college years and the abrupt transition when it’s over can be a particularly challenging time emotionally. Between job searches, student loans, etc. the transition can be especially difficult.

Ourselves Black Magazine

Ourselves Black is a biannual, mental health resource magazine for the Black Community, beautifully written and designed to focus on our exploration of our mental selves through a select number of engaging resources, interviews, stories and photography. Birthed from my perspective as an HBCU educated and Ivy League trained psychiatrist, Ourselves Black is a place where we own the narrative and are unapologetic about our goal: to share imagery and tell stories infused with knowledge that promotes Black mental health.
