The 10th Annual World's Largest Swimming Lesson kicked off today, Thursday, June 20th. More than 50,000 kids in 30 countries on six continents were registered to participate in the anniversary lesson that takes place over the course of 24 hours.
The purpose behind the event? Provide kids AND parents exposure to life-saving skills and build awareness about the crucial need for water safety education and parental vigilance to prevent drowning.
Tragically, childhood drowning remains the leading cause of accidental death for kids ages 1-4 and the second leading cause for kids under 14 with more drowning and near-drowning accidents taking place in June than any other month.
According to a recent report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in 2017, drowning claimed the lives of almost 1,000 children under the age of 20 with another 8,700 seen in emergency rooms for non-fatal drowning events. The current year has been particularly devastating for the state of Texas where they've had 39 fatal child drownings since January including 22 in the last six weeks.

Six people competed in the Holiday Dinner in a Cup eating challenge at Six Flags Over Georgia, Saturday. Contestants had 6 minutes to eat as many cups filled with turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pie for charity.
Zoo Atlanta has a new resident and we have footage!
The zoo welcomes a new ambassador for an endangered species: Tocantins, a 10-year-old female giant otter. A recent arrival from the Jacksonville Zoo, Tocantins was recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Giant Otter Species Survival Plan® (SSP) as a companion for Bakairi, the 7-year-old male giant otter at Zoo Atlanta.
Tocantins is named for a state and river in Brazil, one of the countries where her species is found. The largest of the world’s otters, giant otters are found only in South American river systems, mainly in the Amazon River basin and Pantanal. They are also referred to as “river wolves” for their roles as some of their ecosystem’s most tenacious top predators. Giant otters reach lengths of 6 feet, and males may weigh up to 70 pounds.
