This time next week, come celebrate 5 years of Dude Hugs at Star Bar with Thrillhouse, Darkbloom and MIDIITIS!

Hard to believe it's been 5 years since our first release, Slumberland by Little Miss Cupcake & The Muffin Tops.

Over that time, Dude Hugs has grown to 22 albums with a running time of 13.5 hours. I'm proud of the 52 musicians that laid down 1,117 takes on the 267 songs on these albums.

Shout out to other artists that have contributed to Dude Hugs, like Jed Drummond, The Strange Truth of It All, and Falcon Lords!

Let's talk about John Fripp Pierce and his music

This dude saved my life, in a way

I first met him when he was playing in Not Having Fun and Man Up, Yancey

He did some engineering with me at East Atlanta Recordings when I first started laying down tracks for what became Dude Hugs Records

When I moved over to Diamond Street, I hired him to play on the records Schrodinger by Gondwanaland, Slumberland by Little Miss Cupcake, and Blind Pigs by Twelfth Street Riot

I was lucky enough to be able to help record mix and master his band Post Hunk on this record

Let's talk about Jake Cook and his music

I've been following this guy's career since he started showing up at the same open mics as me over 15 years ago

He's done rap projects like Ridiculous Jacket and Trench Party, but it's also known for some stellar power pop under the bands Seal Pup, Small and others

I mastered one of my favorite records of his, "I Bleed Pop"

Let's talk about Of Persephone

Of Persephone is the brainchild of vocalist and producer Sarah Rae Tramell, with Steven Victor on guitar, Chris Tinsley on bass, and Nicholas Mays on drums

The group started out as support for Sarah's solo stuff, but has since been rebranded and democratized into more of a collaboration between the players

Shout out to Alex Teich today, it's his birthday y'all!

Let's talk about Y'all, the band behind songwriter Alex Huey that's playing with us on Thursday at the Star Bar

Alex Huey has been part of my community for several years now, and friends of mine have played in different iterations of her live outfits, but we didn't get a chance to work together until Alex Teich, who's been playing music with her, suggested she record with me at Diamond Street Studios

We recorded several songs, which I mixed and Spencer Garn mastered, and I think the song "Annie", in particular, turned out very well:

I think her songs rock, and would make make a great soundtrack for a barroom brawl in a Blues Brothers or Roadhouse movie scene, but you'll find her writing littered with tender, vulnerable moments of personal longing and conflict

She always manages to round up got a great cast of characters to play live with her, so expect a great show from them on Thursday!
