At a rally, a woman told John McCain that she didn’t trust Barack Obama. She said, “I’ve read about him, and he’s an Arab.” Her words were based on lies about Obama.
McCain quickly took the microphone from her and responded firmly but respectfully. “No ma’am,” he said. “He’s a decent family man, a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that’s what this campaign is all about.” McCain wanted to make it clear that the rumors were not true.
Even though some people in the crowd didn’t agree with him, McCain continued to stand up for Obama’s character. “He is a decent person, and a person that you do not have to be scared of as President,” he said. McCain focused on the issues and his own ideas, not attacking Obama personally.
McCain also said that if he didn’t think he would be a better president, he wouldn’t run. He praised Obama’s accomplishments and asked for respectful conversations in politics. McCain believed that politics should be about ideas, not negative attacks. This moment from the 2008 campaign is remembered as an example of respect and civility in politics. ❤️
