Memorial Day is a day when we honor the legacy of our ancestors who have passed on before us. It’s a day when we celebrate the lives they lived, the sacrifices they made, and the paths they paved for us. Each of us will one day be a memory, but what will you be remembered for?
Did you lend a helping hand to a neighbor in need? Did you speak up against injustices and stand in solidarity with those who suffered? Did you work to uplift and empower your community, or did you turn a blind eye to the challenges our communities face?
As we reflect on these questions, we must consider the legacy we are building for future generations. Worldwide, our communities are at a crossroads, facing challenges that echo those of our ancestors. Think about the culture in some of our communities today and how it has deteriorated. Look at the struggles we continue to endure—inequality, discrimination, and systemic oppression. Nothing changes if we don't change it.
It's time for the Black man and woman everywhere in the world to unite and organize, to cut the umbilical cord connecting us to this “Western civilization”. To ensure that in 20 years, when our grandchildren and great-grandchildren celebrate Memorial Day, they remember us for our resilience, our strength, our innovation, and our ability to change the world. We must rise to the occasion, united and determined to create a future where our communities thrive and our heritage is honored.
