One of my friends recently purchased a home in the Playa Xcalacoco neighborhood, just north of downtown Playa del Carmen. After a lovely stay at , I extended my stay to hang with them. When traveling, I make a point to start my mornings at local coffee shops, and Ki Delicafe was within walking distance (and highly recommended by my friends).

Ki’i is a women-owned coffee and tea shop in Playa del Carmen serving artisanal sandwiches, salads, pastries, cakes, and juices. Ki’i features locally sourced products and ingredients, including bread from Campanis.

Ki’i has a cozy, inviting feel with plenty of natural light. Customer service is great, and owners Dani and Erica treat you like family. Limited seating is available inside the store.

I ordered a cortado, cinnamon roll, and blueberry muffin. The cortado was tasty, but the highlight of the visit was the cinnamon roll. The roll melts in your mouth and has the perfect balance of cinnamon and sugar.

I look forward to coming back for lunch, as their sandwiches and salads sounded incredible. I’m also secretly hoping the empanadas make a comeback by my next visit!

I was attending a work conference in San Antonio. My colleagues and I attended two vendor functions, both held at , before heading to dinner at .

Prost is a Bavarian restaurant and bar housed in a mid-19th century rock building located on the Riverwalk between La Villita and the Hilton Palacio del Rio.

The interior architecture is a charming throwback to bars past. Prost is also host to an amazing outdoor terrace patio bar overlooking the Riverwalk. The patio features a nightly lineup of local bands and DJs and giant Texas-sized Jenga blocks and other games. If that wasn’t enough fun, the Prost also houses the Alchemy Lounge, a speakeasy-style space featuring innovative cocktails.

Function guests were treated to a catered variety of Prost starters and Happy Hour specials, including Prost Wings, Deviled Eggs, Prost Chili Cheese Fries, Reuben Egg Rolls, Fried Pickles, Mozzarella Sticks, Fried Mushrooms, and Onion Rings.

We also ordered a round (or two) of margaritas. The beverages were solid, but definitely on the strong side.

Service was on the slow side; however, there were two large vendor functions and other patrons, so the bar was understandably slammed.

I look forward to visiting on a less busy evening in San Antonio to fully soak up the patio vibes.

I was attending a work conference in San Antonio. My colleagues and I were hungry after attending a vendor function, and Boudro's Texas Bistro came highly recommended.

Places located within tourist zones tend to be overrated and overpriced. Boudro’s Texas Bistro is not such a place. Boudro’s has been serving an elevated fusion of Southwest and New American cuisines on San Antonio’s Riverwalk since 1986. Boudro’s sources its herbs, produce, and proteins locally whenever possible.

Boudro's vibe is all about the Riverwalk views. There are a variety of dining options, whether inside, on their patio along the Riverwalk, or on one of their private river barges. Boudro’s event spaces can accommodate up to nearly 60 guests. Reservations are recommended for dinner.

I ordered:
Chile-Fried Gulf Oysters served on yucca chips with Serrano honey aioli, pineapple pico de gallo, and greens
Blackened Prime Rib with Boudreaux butter, rosemary potatoes, and roasted vegetables.

Both items were so delicious. The oysters were fried perfectly, and I loved the crispy salty chips with the pico de gallo. The Prime Rib was so flavorful and tender. And I finally understand the hype surrounding butter and steaks. I was so glad my hotel room (Element San Antonio Riverwalk) had a refrigerator and microwave as it was gone by mid-morning.

I was in San Antonio attending a work conference at the Convention Center. I always make a point to start my mornings at local coffee shops when out of town. is located in the Savoy building in downtown San Antonio.

Founded in Austin, Royal Blue Grocery is a modern urban grocery whose offerings are responsive to the community it serves. It features and in its coffee bar/deli and locally sourced, unique grocery, convenience, and gourmet grab-and-go products. Its hot sandwiches are freshly prepared, and the San Antonio store has an impressive wine selection.

Royal Blue Grocery is not your typical bodega and has a cozy, inviting feel with plenty of natural light. Limited seating is available both inside and outside the store, but all seats are great for people-watching. Customer service is very solid and definitely more coffee shop-like than corner store.

The coffee was great, and I plan to try their prepared items during my next trip to San Antonio.

What started as a joke between friends Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson & Tres Shannon two decades ago to achieve “world doughnut domination” led to an acclaimed doughnut franchise spawning 19 locations in 7 states. Voodoo Doughnut is about breaking barriers, both in doughnut offerings & community building.

I was in San Antonio for a work conference. Disappointed that I had missed visiting a shop in Portland earlier in the year, I was excited for the second chance to experience a Voodoo Doughnut.

The Downtown San Antonio bakery is a sea of pink & as eclectic as you would envision a Portland-based chain. Where else would a Longhorn & Baron Samedi (who leads Mardi Gras parades) be eyeing a giant crystal chandelier?

The staff is friendly & knowledgeable about the different offerings. There is sufficient indoor & outdoor seating for those who can’t wait to take a bite. The outdoor seating allows for good people-watching.

I ordered the glazed raised, limited edition Go-Tart (think Pop-Tart), & the Chuckles (peanuts and caramel and chocolate). It took everything in me not to order the Bacon Maple Bar (I still regret the decision).

Voodoo Doughnut is for the unapologetic sweet-tooth members of society. With that said, I really enjoyed all three. I was surprised to enjoy the Go-Tart as much as I did (since I am not a fan of Pop-Tarts). Their coffee is also really good.

Are these the best doughnuts in America? No. But they are definitely one of the best doughnut franchises, & I will not miss the opportunity to try them whenever I am a quick car ride from a bakery.

is a locally owned neighborhood wine bar in northwest San Antonio. Owners Khalilah and Chris Douglas created a hidden gem that fosters a sense of community and celebrates women winemakers, family-owned wineries, and minority-owned winemakers. In addition to wine, Wine 210 offers charcuterie items, desserts, wine flights, sangria, and margaritas.

I was in San Antonio for a work conference. One of my colleagues, a fellow foodie, invited us to visit his friend’s wine bar.

Wine 210 has a warm, cozy vibe despite being in the midst of a seemingly common shopping center. There are a variety of seating options available, from a sleek bar to tables for group seating. The lighting and R&B music are perfect for talking with friends or making new ones. Customer service was solid. We also enjoyed talking with Kahlilah and another industry veteran about the oenophile journeys.

We ordered:
The Douglas (charcuterie) Board
Red Pepper Hummus and Pita Bread
White Sangria
Red Sangria
Sip Me Baby, One More Time (Red Bodied Wine Flight)

I would not recommend visiting Wine 210 on an empty stomach. The food selection is limited and meant for nibbling while you sip on a glass of wine. However, the wine flight was well-balanced and full-bodied, and we thoroughly enjoyed our harmonious, flavorful sangrias.

Brito Supermarket #2 is a small, unassuming supermarket that serves the best pollo asado (grilled chicken) in Atlanta, as well as costillas (ribs) and chicharrónes. It is on the corner of Curtis Dr. and Buford Highway in Brookhaven. There are other locations in Marietta and on Chamblee Tucker Road (Embry Hills area).

The smokers led me to pull into the driveway one day years ago out of sheer curiosity. Now that I work and live close, I am probably at Brito on a monthly basis.
My friends often ask me to bring pollo asado and the fixings for potluck dinners. I usually pick up onions, cilantro, jalapeños, and homemade tortillas before heading to the register (I love a one-stop shop).

Especially for its diminutive size, Brito has a well-stocked meat counter, fresh produce, fresh tortillas, and Latino specialty pantry items and sweets. Upon walking in, head past the cashier and take a right to find the meat counter.

The pollo asado is expertly seasoned, juicy, and smoked to perfection. There are a few picnic tables if, like me, you can’t resist tearing open the Saran-wrapped container (I usually have to sample it in my car).

But the ribs are also really good. I love the smoky flavor and tenderness of the ribs. You know you are experiencing tasty ribs when you do not miss barbeque sauce. Homemade salsa verde and rojo accompany both meats (warning: both salsas are kicking).

Don’t forget to pick up tasty fresh chicharrónes. The pork rind variety is more regularly available than the ones with the pork belly.

is a Korean bathhouse in Duluth featuring hot & cold tubs, steam rooms, saunas, & spa services. The spa is open daily until at least midnight (services close at 9:30p).

My husband and a couple of my friends love a bathhouse, & Spa Land is one of their favorites. It is the perfect staycation where one can unwind and engage in diverse health and beauty rituals.

The entry fee covers the cost of lockers, showers, clothing for the co-ed areas, & unlimited use of the tubs, saunas, & infrared beds. Spa services, such as scrubs, massages, & v-steams, are available first come, first served at an additional cost.

Once you enter the locker rooms, shoes are prohibited. The locker & wet areas are gender-specific & include steam rooms, spa tubs, & showers. Note: You will be n**e in the wet areas & will be required to shower before accessing the wet area services. I highly recommend the scrub (request it in the locker room); it is a unique experience, and my skin never felt so soft & smooth.

The co-ed area features a variety of sitting options, 9 therapeutic mineral sauna rooms, infrared beds, & a food court featuring traditional Korean foods. Bring socks if you don’t love the notion of being barefoot in the co-ed area.

We ordered the following at the food court:
Sikhye: Korean Sweet Rice Drink
Ginger Tea
Plum Smoothie
French Fries
Egg rolls
Sweet and Sour Chicken
Bulgogi

The french fries were solid, served piping hot w/ a crispy batter. We kept gravitating towards them. The staff recommended the bulgogi, which was actually pretty flavorful & tender. The egg rolls were average, & I would not recommend the chicken, as it needed to be fried longer.

You cannot go wrong with any of the drinks. My husband enjoyed the ginger tea so much, he had to buy his own to stop from drinking all of mine.

Plucked Up - Chicken & Biscuits is a downtown Columbus, GA breakfast/lunch eatery, of course, specializing in chicken and biscuits. Serving breakfast and lunch for over a decade, Plucked Up is a sister restaurant of and Hunter’s Pub & Steakhouse, all concepts of restauranteer Mark Jones.

My husband is from Columbus, GA, so we have a tradition of visiting for Thanksgiving. We stayed a little longer than normal to attend a family mini-reunion held at the nearby Hampton Inn Columbus Downtown. We were starving and needed a quick bite to eat, and Plucked Up was the closest non-fast food restaurant open.

Plucked Up is an intimate eatery with exposed brick walls showcasing brightly colored, eclectic meets country decor. The wait staff was super friendly and welcoming despite a packed eatery. Our to-go order came out so quickly, I didn’t finish taking my usual quantity of pictures.

We both ordered Plucked Up Biscuits (my husband added an egg to his).
I am actually shaking my head as to why we hadn’t been to Plucked Up during prior visits to Columbus. The biscuits were buttery and fluffy, the chicken was crispy and flavorful, and the pineapple marmalade had the right level of sweetness. I was eyeing the biscuit beignets being served as we walked out, and something tells me that the chelsea (fried chicken, pimento cheese, bacon, and jalapeño jelly) will be life-affirming.

Sweet Auburn BBQ features delicious BBQ & southern classics w/ an Asian twist, a nod to sibling owners Howard & Anita Hsu’s cultural upbringing. The concept originated as a food truck & counter prior to its 2014 opening.

Sweet Auburn BBQ has locations in Atlanta (Poncey-Highland) & McDonough. Make sure to park in the parking deck across from the restaurant to receive validated parking; otherwise, you will have to pay a grip to park.

Sweet Auburn’s smoked wings is a popular delivery item at my house. But my husband & I finally made an in-person visit for the February 2024 Indo-Chinese Dinner, a collaboration with popular pop-up w/ Dhaba BBQ, , & highly heralded new Doraville soju tasting room .

We ordered:
from the Specialty Menu: Curry Brisket Bao, Brisket Rendang
From the Regular Menu: Pimento Cheese Wontons, Two Item Combo Plate (pulled chicken, smoked wings, Thai Chile Brussels Sprouts, mac and cheese), Jade Claw.

We did not have a bad bite! The pulled chicken was surprisingly moist & flavorful, the brisket tender, & the Brussels sprouts were spectacular. An added benefit was that the Brisket Rendang was so flavorful as a leftover. Needless to say, we will be back (word on the street is that the Banana Pudding is a must-eat), & Sweet Auburn BBQ has crept onto my ATL BBQ favorite list.

Hibachi Furano is a network of chefs providing private mobile hibachi services around metro Atlanta. The chefs tout fifteen years of Japanese culinary experience.

The meal itself consists of a side salad (ginger dressing), hibachi vegetables, fried rice, homemade dipping sauce (teriyaki, yum-yum), and 2 proteins of their choice (tofu, chicken, jumbo shrimp, NY strip steak, scallops). There is an extra charge for filet mignon and lobster.

My friend hired Hibachi Furano for a recent milestone birthday in her backyard for a dozen guests. Our chef was the consummate professional, and we were thoroughly entertained with sake squirts, flying spatulas, and the fire shaker show. All of our vegetables and proteins were well cooked and seasoned.

Once the experience was over (about ninety minutes), our chef discreetly and quickly cleaned up his workstation and slipped out without disrupting the party.

I am going to have to find a reason to hire Hibachi Furano for a future event. We had a blast, and working with Hibachi Furano was hassle-free.

The name says it all: Fat Matt's Rib Shack is a legendary (30+ years) Morningside fast-casual eatery with some of the best ribs in metro Atlanta.

Fat Matt’s is located near the intersection of Piedmont and Rock Springs Roads. The eatery has a tight parking lot. It is MARTA accessible via the 27 and 809 buses.

Fat Matt’s is as simple and straightforward as an Atlanta establishment can be. Its charm lies in its simplicity, a hole-in-the-wall with a no-frills menu. Enjoy the ribs while listening to live music, mostly blues, on most evenings beginning at 7pm. The line at the counter can extend out the door; however, the line flows pretty quickly.

The charcoal-grilled ribs are nicely blackened and fall-off-the-bone tender. The main barbecue sauce is vinegar-based, but the ribs are tasty by themselves.

The collard greens are, by far, my favorite side. The sweet potato pie is pretty solid if you have a sweet tooth after eating a half rack of ribs. And you’re in luck if you’re a beer drinker!
