REASONS FOR THE FUEL SCARCITY

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has said that the petrol scarcity witnessed in the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and parts of the country is a result of distribution challenges.

This is as the firm said that it is working round the clock to end the challenge before midweek.

It disclosed this in a statement on Sunday by its spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye.

This comes as fuel scarcity worsens across the country.

NNPCL, which is the sole importer of petrol in Nigeria, however, assured that it was working round the clock with stakeholders in the oil and gas sector to return to normalcy.

“The NNPC Ltd regrets the tightness in fuel supply witnessed in some parts of Lagos and the FCT (Federal Capital Territory), which is a result of distribution challenges.

“The company further urges motorists to shun panic buying as it is working round the clock with relevant stakeholders to restore normalcy,” it said.

BREAKING: TINUBU NEW JET JUST LANDED

The newly acquired luxury Airbus A330 aircraft for presidential use by the Bola Tinubu administration has arrived in Abuja.

SaharaReporters learnt that the aircraft touched down at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Sunday evening, after departing from EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg in France at 4:16 pm and landing in Abuja at 8:29 pm.

This follows the release of the aircraft, which was one of the three presidential jets recently confiscated by a French court in favour of a Chinese firm over a dispute with Ogun State Government.

SaharaReporters reported on Friday that Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited had announced the release of one of the three presidential aircraft belonging to Nigeria, which had been detained in France.

I WILL DROP MY PRESIDENTIAL AMBITION IF JOHNATHAN DECIDED TO RUN IN 2027- BAUCHI GOVERNOR

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has revealed that he will drop his presidential ambition if former President Goodluck Jonathan decides to run for the top seat in 2027.

Mohammed, a governor under the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), made this statement on Thursday at the Government House in Bauchi when a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) urged him to consider running for the presidency.

Mohammed used the occasion to express his admiration for Jonathan’s leadership qualities and experience, saying he would be a better candidate for the job.

He said, “With regard to your call for me to present myself, I am still contemplating my chances as the leader of the opposition.

“I know there are good leaders within the PDP, especially my boss, Goodluck Jonathan.“I have always said that as long as Jonathan is around, I will not present myself for leadership of this country, unless he decides not to run.

If we can persuade him to come forward, I will support him with my blood. Out of modesty, he is still not ready. I hope you will meet him and encourage him to run.

The governor praised Jonathan’s past achievements, including his inclusive leadership style, initiatives for unemployed youths, and efforts to address the Almajiri system. “He will do a better job because he has the experience,” Mohammed said.

Mohammed also clarified that his criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration are intended to help put the country on the right path, adding that his responsibility as a leader is to speak out.

THERE'S NOTHING HE WILL BE ABLE TO DO ABOUT IT.

According to the report from the Sun, Economic and financial experts have outlined immediate actions the Bola Tinubu administration should take to address the ongoing nationwide protests. In discussions with Saturday Sun, they suggested measures such as subsidizing food costs, reducing governance expenses, and ensuring transparency in the distribution of palliatives.

The protests, which began on Thursday over rising living costs and hunger, have escalated into violence, property destruction, and loss of life across the country.

Aliyu Ilias, an economist and development expert, stressed the need for President Bola Tinubu to address the nation and present a clear one-year plan. He suggested focusing on the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to mitigate transportation costs if fuel subsidies cannot be reinstated. Ilias also recommended that Tinubu consider reshuffling his cabinet, including appointing a new Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, and ensuring that state governors clearly outline their use of federal funds.

Prof. Femi Saibu from the University of Lagos criticized the government's handling of palliatives, emphasizing that resources must reach those in need. Saibu noted that political intermediaries often divert aid intended for the public, exacerbating poverty despite government spending. He advocated for investment in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and agriculture as more effective alternatives to cash transfers.

Economic Consultant Brume Nikoro advised reducing government waste and supporting small-scale industries and startups with interest-free loans. He also recommended boosting agriculture and technology sectors through targeted programs.

ENDBADGOVERNMENT: POLICE ON RED ALART AS THE PROTEST TURN BLOODY

Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, Thursday night decried the dimensions of the ongoing EndBadGovernance protest in the country.

DAILY POST reports that Nigerians across many states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, took to the streets as they commenced an earlier announced 10-day protest against hardship in the country.

However, the first day of the protest witnessed widespread violence and lootings across major cities, with many protesters reported dead.

The major flashpoints were in Kano, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, FCT Abuja, Niger, Jigawa and Nasarawa States.

Some of the states have already imposed curfew in a bid to contain the situation.

Addressing a press conference, the IGP, who knocked the promoters of the protest for being nowhere around to lead it, urged them to end it.

He said the security agencies had been vindicated in their earlier intelligence that the protest would turn violent.

According to him, “It is with a grave sense of responsibility that I address you this evening. You will recall that upon several indications by various groups of their intent to commence a nationwide protest on 1st August, 2024, we rolled out several warnings based on actionable intelligence at our disposal indicating that some groups were mobilizing our youths for violent protests with intent to create anarchy in the country.

“While some groups claiming to be mobilizing for peaceful protests were doing so with violent undertones, refusing to cooperate with the Police on measures to be taken to guarantee peaceful protest.

“On the basis of this intelligence, the Police advised that the protests should be shelved at the instant time. Where the organizers insisted on going on with the protests, they were advised to stage the protest in confined locations.

“This would have enabled the police provide adequate protection for the protesters and isolate the criminals whose intention was to loot and destroy in the name of a protest.

“This we were doing in furtherance of our duty to protect lives and property and maintaining law and order.

“While we affirmed the constitutional rights of citizens to assemble and express their views on issues of national importance, we were wary about the dangers posed by agitation instigated by some individuals who have shown tendencies to be disloyal to the government of the day.

“Despite our suspicions, we showed good faith through professional conduct by providing security at strategic locations all aimed at ensuring peaceful conduct during the protest as the promoters pledged.

Our men deployed nationwide went out with a clear brief to ensure that no one is unnecessarily harassed or intimidated. In places where there were court orders, we gave instructions for observance of same.

“Regrettably, events in some major cities today showed that what was being instigated was mass uprising and looting, not protest.

“Those who were in the forefront of promoting the idea of the protest were not around to lead it. Hoodlums have been let loose on innocent Nigerians and their hard-earned businesses and property looted and destroyed.

“The motive of the rioters was basically two; loot and destroy both private and government property. The destruction so far has been mind-boggling.

“There has been destruction in Kano, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, FCT Abuja, Niger, Jigawa. Police stations have been destroyed, there have been attempts to take over government houses, looting of government infrastructures, several warehouses and shops have so far been looted and, in several instances, completely destroyed.”

He decried that “ispite of the refusal of the protesters, for instance in FCT to adhere to a court order requesting that protest in Abuja should be at the National Stadium, they trooped into the streets, and yet the police provided security for them. At no point did we breach their fundamental rights even as they breached court order.

“In places like FCT, Kaduna, Kano and Gombe, among others, we recorded incidents of unprovoked attacks on security personnel, where one policeman has been reported murdered and others seriously injured.

“We alerted earlier on that terror elements may take advantage of the protests to infiltrate the crowd of protesters with su***de bombers. Yesterday in Lagos, our EOD team was informed of a suspected IED on Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja. The team responded swiftly and rendered safe what turned out to be an improvised explosive device (IED).

“Today in Borno State, we recorded one incident of an explosion which occurred in the crowd of protesters killing 4 instantly and severely injuring 34 others, many of whom are presently on danger list.

“We wish to advise law abiding citizens of Nigeria to heed and not dismiss warnings given by the police and other security agencies which were based on credible and actionable security intelligence.

THIS HAVE NEVER HAPPEN IN ABUJA BEFORE

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Ben Igweh, has said that there is no need for the FCT residents to participate in the hunger protest because the government has been doing a good job in the FCT.

The nationwide protest scheduled to take place on August 1 has been gathering momentum among Nigerians, with many expressing concerns about what the protest could turn into.

Nigerians, under various groups, have been saying that the protest is aimed at drawing the attention of the government to the hunger and economic hardship that the masses are facing.

While reacting to the planned protest, the FCT Police Commissioner said that they have been in the FCT for some time, and that they had never seen the kind of infrastructural development going on now.

Speaking during an interview with Arise News on Tuesday, the police boss said that major roads have been constructed in the FCT and

He said, "I started appealing to the youths, to the residents of FCT, that there is no need for this protest, especially in the FCT. Why especially in FCT? Because people were talking about insecurity, now they don't talk about insecurity in the FCT again? It's the government, this government has made the difference very clear.

"We have been in FCT, we have not seen things like this before in FCT. You can see the roads, you can see even in the rural areas."

He said that there is no part of the FCT he does not know, and that he can state categorically that the FCT is no longer the way it used to be.

THE NATIONWIDE PROTEST CAN DESTROY NIGERIA

The Chairman, Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa’kamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS), Katsina State, Sheikh Yakubu Musa, on Friday, called on the youths to shun the planned nationwide protest against economic hardship for peaceful coexistence in the country.

Musa believes the protest could end up destroying the nation.

The cleric made the appeal while addressing the Muslim faithful shortly after prayer at Al-Sanawiyya Mosque, Katsina.

“Like here in Katsina, we are also disturbed by insecurity.

“We should shun the planned protest. We should not be part of it, our youths should also shun from being part of it.

“Because it could destroy the nation, we have seen what happened in some countries where as a result of protest, the countries had been thrown into war and total destruction,” Musa warned.

According to Al-Jazeera, former U.S. President Donald Trump credited a chart on immigration statistics for saving his life during a recent shooting incident.

Representative Ronny Jackson of Texas, who was present during the incident, recounted Trump's harrowing experience during a press conference.

“That chart that I was going over saved my life,” Trump reportedly told Jackson. The former president was reviewing the chart in preparation for a public address when the incident occurred.

According to Jackson, Trump had turned to the chart to describe its details just moments before shots were fired.

The bullet narrowly missed Trump, striking the wall behind where he had been standing moments earlier. The quick reflex to consult the chart is believed to have diverted Trump’s position, potentially preventing a fatal injury.

The chart, which detailed recent immigration statistics and trends, was part of a broader presentation Trump was preparing to deliver on his vision for immigration reform.

The event, held at a private venue in Houston, was intended to outline Trump's stance on border security and immigration policies, key issues he has consistently highlighted throughout his political career.

Local law enforcement and the Secret Service are investigating the incident. The assailant, whose identity has not been disclosed, was apprehended at the scene. Authorities have not yet released information on the motive behind the attack.

The incident has sparked a wave of reactions from both Trump supporters and political figures across the spectrum.

Many have expressed relief that the former president escaped, while others have called for increased security measures at political events.

In the wake of the incident, Trump's team has announced that he will temporarily suspend his public appearances.

However, they assured supporters that he remains committed to his political endeavors and will continue to advocate for the issues he deems crucial for the country's future.
