Despite grim forecasts and economic slowdown, Q1 of 2022 demonstrated strong
endurance within the Israeli tech market.

In an uncertain economic environment derived from geopolitical tensions, rising
inflation, interest rates, and a decline in tech investment, interest - Israeli start-ups
raised $5.5 billion during Q1

Deals over $100m continued to play a major role in capital allocation (accounting for 44% of
the capital raised). 95% of that capital was VC-backed. Main industry players were Cyber Security; Fintech; IoT; and Foodtech.

While Israeli investors kept their investment patterns in local high-tech companies,
foreign investments demonstrated a 16% decline from the average quarterly amounts in the previous year.

2021 A RECORD YEAR IN ISRAELI HIGH-TECH CAPITAL INVESTMENT



According to IVC-Meitar Israeli Tech Review for 2021 there were 773 total deals attracting $25.6 billion in capital investments, a 146% jump over 2020. 77 of last year’s deals were for more than $100 million each. These mega deals eclipsed those in 2020 by nearly four times.

Further, the study has found Israeli high-tech exits skyrocketed to $22.2 billion, with almost equal shares of M&As and IPOs. And, IPOs in 2021 peaked with 75 deals, 23 on Wall Street.

Mike Rimon, a partner in Meitar law Offices, pointed out that "2021 was the year of the "Big Bang" in terms of IPOs of Israeli companies in the US. After years in which very few Israeli companies went public in the US, this year 23 Israeli companies listed their securities in the US, most of them at very high valuations. This became possible due to extraordinary growth in the capital markets (a consequence – among other things - of the US government incentives and programs, resulting in surplus cash "seeking" potential investment channels, and of the extremely low-interest rates), the maturity of excellent Israeli companies that grew here during recent years, the longstanding and growing involvement of American investors in the Israeli companies (encouraging IPOs in the US) and the unprecedented growth of the technology sector globally (and in particular during the COVID-19 period).”

Is the Southeast U.S. the new frontier for Israeli economic opportunity?

Our colleagues, Randall Foster, Chair and Barry Swartz, VP at Conexx: America Israel Business Connector certainly make a convincing argument that it is!

As a dynamic hub for cutting edge industries, an area of long-distinguished institutions of higher education and a roaring economy attracting some of the world's most prominent tech giants, the Southeast should most definitely be on the Startup Nation's radar.

It is on BIRD's. With over 30 BIRD projects already approved between Israeli and U.S. companies in the core Southeast states, we certainly see the potential to expand collaborations in the region.

In fact, BIRD's East Coast Business Development Director Andrea Yonah along with newly-appointed BIRD representative for Texas and the Southeast, Shiri Freund Koren, are making it their mission to bring together the most promising innovative partners from Israel and the Southeast region to benefit from BIRD's $1 million non-dilutive grants for bilateral R&D collaboration.

The next funding round is for the BIRD Energy program, with a deadline of June 30, 2021 for executive summaries.

The BIRD Foundation, along with Conexx: America Israel Business Connector, Consulate General of Israel in the Southeastern U.S. and the Georgia International law Enforcement Exchange (GILEE) at Georgia State University, will be discussing the role U.S. and Israeli R&D collaboration can play in addressing public security challenges and the unique BIRD-HLS funding opportunity for jointly developing state-of-the-art solutions.

Also participating will be two BIRD-HLS grantees, Tekwave from Alpharetta, GA and Israeli advanced sensor developer MSTech, who will discuss their own successful BIRD partnership as well as share best practices for submitting a winning proposal.

Fostering opportunities for cooperation between tech entrepreneurs in Israel and Alabama was the focus at the recent BIRD event hosted by Alabama Power in Birmingham.

Along with co-sponsors Birmingham Business Alliance and Conexx: America Israel Business Connector, BIRD Business Development Director Andrea Yonah discussed the potential for strategic partnerships between the two states to promote innovation and economic development.

grantees Yarotek (partnered with Ramat Gan's Solview Systems Ltd) and Southern Company (partnered with Petach Tikva's mPrest systems) spoke about their experiences collaborating with Israeli companies and the benefits of receiving BIRD support.

Director of RealtySouth's Relocation Services Department, Jonathan Cohen, had the pleasure of attending the "Opportunities for Technology Partnerships Between Alabama and Israeli Business" presentation hosted by Alabama Power, Birmingham Business Alliance, BIRD Foundation - Israel-U.S. Binational Industrial R&D and Conexx: America Israel Business Connector held earlier this week!

The presentation was enlightening and provided a great overview of Israel's technology ecosystem. Alabama is currently home to several companies from Israel.
