England boss Carsley won't sing national anthem

England interim manager Lee Carsley has said he will not sing the national anthem ahead of the UEFA Nations League game against Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

Carsley, who is taking charge of his first game since replacing Gareth Southgate on a temporary basis, was born in England but represented Ireland 40 times, becoming eligible through his grandmother. The 50-year old's admission has prompted a backlash in certain quarters, but Carsley said it has never been an issue for him and facing the country he represented is not a factor.

"This [the anthem] is something that I always struggled with when I was playing for Ireland," Carsley, who also managed England at under-19 and under-21 level, said.

"The gap between your warm-up, your coming on to the pitch and the delay with the anthems. So it's something that I have never done.

"I was always really focused on the game and my first actions of the game. I really found that in that period I was wary about my mind wandering off.

"I was really focused on the football and I have taken that in to coaching. We had the national anthem with the Under-21s also and I am in a zone at that point.

"I am thinking about how the opposition are going to set up and our first actions within the game. I fully respect both anthems and understand how much they mean to both countries. It's something I am really respectful of." Meanwhile, Carsley also said England are not looking for a fresh start and that he is actually looking to build on the platform left to him by Southgate, who reached the final of Euro 2024.

"I definitely don't see this as a fresh start," Carsley said. "I spoke about it before in terms of taking over a team as a caretaker manager low on confidence, low down the league and struggling. This is the total opposite to that. This is a team coming off the back of a tournament.

"It's a difference of opinion whether it was successful or not. I think it was. First of all, qualifying for a major tournament is an achievement and then to get as far as they did and so close and falling short.

"Yeah, I don't see this as a fresh start. This is a chance to build on what they've done in the past." ゚

MILAN GLORIE HEADS TO GEORGIA FOR SPORT FOR CHANGE

Milan Glorie returns to the field. The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 21 in Georgia at 7:00 PM local time (5:00 PM in Italy) at the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi, where the Rossoneri team will challenge the Georgia Legends. It will be a special celebration, part of the Club's 125th Anniversary festivities, featuring many champions who have written important pages of AC Milan's history – former teammates who have shared locker rooms, victories, and unforgettable success stories: from Kaká to Rivaldo, from Seedorf to Cafu, and of course, Kakhaber Kaladze, who will host them for this special event.

Kaladze, born in Samtredia, has been the mayor of Tbilisi since 2017. A true Milanista, and the winner of 2 Champions League titles, 2 UEFA Super Cups, 1 Club World Cup, 1 Serie A title, 1 Coppa Italia, and 1 Italian Super Cup from 2001 to 2010, he will take the field with both teams. Speaking about his emotions ahead of the match, he said: “I am very happy about this opportunity, being able to reunite with people with whom I spent wonderful years. AC Milan has given me so much, both as a man and as a footballer. I am proud to have worn the Rossoneri jersey, and I always cheer for them: Forza Milan sempre!”

In addition to bringing together many champions from the past, the match will also serve as a significant demonstration of the Rossoneri family’s continued commitment to addressing important social issues. Part of the proceeds from the match and the auctions for the jerseys worn by the AC Milan and Georgian legends during the game will be donated by Fondazione Milan to support its international Sport for Change program, which uses sport as a tool for social inclusion, growth, and positive change for many young people living in vulnerable social environments.

In the 2023/24 season alone, the Sport for Change program impacted the lives of over 3,000 beneficiaries in Italy and around the world, through 15 initiatives across five continents, reaching countries such as Brazil, the United States, India, and Kenya, as well as Uganda, Pakistan, and Syria.

The match will be broadcast live on the AC Milan Official App and Milan TV from 5:00 PM Italian time on Saturday, September 21. ゚

Boss explains reason why Federico Chiesa was LEFT OUT of squad

Liverpool's summer signing Federico Chiesa was not selected for the latest Italy squad, following discussions with manager Luciano Spalletti.

Italy boss Spalletti spoke to the media and explained his reasoning behind Liverpool's new signing not being a part of the fold for their Nations League games.

The former Napoli manager said that he wanted to call up Chiesa, but after speaking to the 26-year-old following his move to Liverpool, it was decided that the player would stay on Merseyside.

"Chiesa and I spoke, and made a fair assessment. I would have brought him as an extra player, not participating in the games. He told me that he had spoken to his new club and that he needs to do specific preparation work with them," Spalletti confirmed.

Italy travelled to face France on Friday night, and are also scheduled to lock horns with Israel on Monday.

Chiesa signed for the Reds in the final week of the summer window for an initial fee of £10 million and after being in attendance at Old Trafford to watch his new team-mates destroy rivals Manchester United, preparation work during this international break will enable him to bolster an already dangerous attacking force.

Chiesa already impressing on training pitch
Chiesa has undergone training with Liverpool's under 21s this week in a bid to improve his fitness ahead of Nottingham Forest's visit to Anfield next Saturday.

Under 21s manager Barry Lewtas has been full of praise for the Italian, saying that Chiesa's presence at training has not only helped the Italian, but given the youngsters a taste of what it's like to play against someone of that level.

"You can see from the quality of his career so far, this is why he's at one of the best clubs in the world. His professionalism and his quality was really good. It just gives our boys a little bit of a chance to play against someone of that quality [and] it's a really good learning opportunity for them," Lewtas said to Liverpool FC. ゚
