The Color Purple (2023) is one of the holiday season's most anticipated movies. It is the latest adaptation of the 1982 Alice Walker novel of the same name, which went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1983. The novel was first adapted into a 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg, which was a unique project for him to tackle at the time as he was predominantly known for his summer blockbusters. Additionally, it was the very first film in which Spielberg did not hire John Williams as the composer, and the soundtrack was instead provided by Quincy Jones.

Overall the trailer proves that this remake is truly a must see this holiday season!

No Place Like Home: Amber Jackson Returns to ATL for “The Wiz”
By Justice Frederick

Since first performing in her church’s praise team in her hometown of Decatur, Georgia, Amber Jackson’s path to dance was one driven by passion, patience, fun, and faith. She explored every opportunity to practice her newfound talent, including joining her middle school’s marching band and drill team. “I did Drill Team, I did marching band, and realized I didn’t want to be in marching band, but I loved music! I always loved music.”

That love was quickly discovered by her mother, who to feed her daughter’s ambitions, made Amber audition for the DeKalb School of the Arts in her eighth-grade year. Her acceptance to the institution was a very important stepping stone to her creative world, having been introduced to other new mediums like Theatre, Graphic Design and the Dancemakers of Atlanta. The next five years would help cultivate Amber into a well-rounded creative .

Following her first year of schooling at Point Park University as a Ballet major, Amber found that she would learn much better under the leadership of Alonzo King in San Francisco, California:
“My program at Point Park… it was like three Black girls in our program at that time… I was just sick of being in spaces that didn’t look like me. [Alonzo King LINES] is an amazing company… which was the hardest program I had ever done…It’s abstract and it pushed me out of my comfort zone.”

The training eventually led Amber back to the auditions for Season 9 of So You Think You Can Dance, which she had previously tried out twice for during her year in college and in high school. Amber first auditioned for Seasons 6 and 7, where she was unable to make it to the Top 20, but it was Season 9 where she ended up cracking the Top 16.

Amber first auditioned for Seasons 6 and 7, where she was unable to make it to the Top 20, but it was Season 9 where she ended up cracking the Top 16.

Following her stint on the show, one of Amber’s teachers encouraged the young ingenue to audition for a part in an adaptation of Wicked. She wasn’t initially on board with the idea of being involved, which was only exacerbated after a series of microaggressions while rehearsing. “My boss, he would call me, ‘Hey Black girl’... and I would just kind of laugh it off because I didn’t know any better then… because what do you say?” It was experiences like this one that fed her ambition to speak up more about the Black experience in musical theatre and define clearer goals of what she aspired to do next.

Despite the ups and downs of her experience, Amber still felt like she found family in the show, and it gave her enough confidence and integrity to take on a new opportunity in Chicago: Hamilton. “I left Broadway to go do Hamilton in Chicago… I stayed there for two and a half years, and had no idea I would fall in love with Chicago! It’s one of my favorite cities still to this day.”

Amber Jackson is now participating in the Ensemble cast for The Wiz, which rolled into Atlanta this week. She also teaches dance and encourages the message of perseverance and hard work to every life she touches.

The tents are up at Atlantic Station for Echo, a new Cirque du Soliel show!  They will be in town until January!

SoFu Lifestyle was able to catch up with some of the performers behind the scenes. Campbell Clarke is from Albury, Australia and has been on the road for a year. He told SoFu Lifestyle that his town has a circus school and that he learned to fly high on the teeterboard there! After this Atlanta run, he will go back to Australia to visit family. He is traveling in the troupe of Echo acrobats with 5 other guys from Australia. It’s our pleasure to welcome Campbell and all the performers to Atlanta! PHOTOS BY TIFFANY POWELL PHOTOGRAPHY

In just six minutes at seven years old, Zuri Noelle Ford established her natural gift of dance. She reminisced over an old home video her parents still had of her, dancing the Macarena, straight-faced and moving to the lyrics on each turn and hand movement. She recalls her parents saying, “This is the moment we knew you were gonna be doing this for real.”
