BREAKING: Courageous and Brave Ex-Wife Exposes ICE Killer's Violent Past: "I Need to Come Out Because a Man Lost His Life"
She knew him better than anyone, and she just told the country everything.
Ashley Brouillette, the first ex-wife of David Brouillette, the ICE officer who shot and killed 25-year-old Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine, is blowing the whistle on the man federal officials tried to keep anonymous, and her account is devastating.
She says he called her after the shooting and admitted he killed Durán Guerrero, then asked her to cover for him. "He told me all I needed to know was that it was a justified shooting," she said. "He's like, 'I need you to lie about my character because this is what it comes down to. I don't want you talking about any of the abuse in our relationship.'"
She refused to lie. Instead, she exposed all of it.
She told the AP the violence began after she became pregnant with their daughter, and that she divorced him in 2009 because of it. In one incident she described, corroborated by her own mother, he threw boiling water at her while she was holding their child. She says the abuse continued after she left, including harassing phone calls and threats to kill her.
She also revealed just how deep his psychiatric history runs. She says she personally reported concerns about his mental health to his military superiors years ago, and his instability was so well known to her that when he claimed late last year he'd been hired by ICE, she assumed he was having a mental health episode and didn't believe him. She only realized it was true when videos of the shooting surfaced this week.
Her courage opened the floodgates. His second ex-wife filed a protective order request Thursday saying he once threatened to kill her, that he was medically discharged from the military in 2015 for PTSD, and that their 11-year-old daughter is in danger. Hundreds of family court records document years of abuse allegations, and his own relatives told the AP he never should have been given a badge and a gun.
DHS still refuses to officially name the shooter, the agents wore no body cameras, and Durán Guerrero, a delivery driver and father whose three-year-old daughter was in the car, wasn't even the target of the operation. Officials wanted this buried, and one woman refused to let them.
"I need to come out because a man lost his life," she said. "I believe that this man was murdered." It takes extraordinary bravery to defy a man you say has threatened your life, in front of the entire country, and Ashley Brouillette did it anyway. Because of her, the truth is out and it cannot be put back.
